I'm sorry to hear of your bad luck with gearboxes. I used the original 1000 box behind my big bore 1200GX for a short while untill i got the 5 speed, never a moments drama with either one.

The stock 1000 box remained in my wife's '68 1000 2 door with a mildly improved 1200 [flat top pistons, mild cam, A14 carb, & 1000 coupe exhaust manifold] It's still on the road with that box, 15 years later.

The stock 1200 box stayed in my 1200 ute, even after i re-used the displaced 76mm pistons in it that came from my GX [when i wore it out & went to 76.5mm]. The ute was sold to a bloke near a beach & the body rusted out, but the original box was still in it to the end.
I guess that i must have just had GOOD luck. It wouldn't have had anything to do with the way i drive.
