Have you thought of replacing the carb with a DGV Weber ? They've got a lot fewer parts, are a much simpler unit and are more effective ? You can get one from a Wrecker for about $50 (off a 2L Escort or Cortina). Many people here, including myself, have done this to eliminate things like the very hassles you're having.
