Here at Dimlight Racing we've been discussing this swap for quite some time (epsecially since Tim has a Subrau for a daily driver). Having measured all of the Subaru flat fours I can tell you that none of the good ones "fit". The EJ20T and EJ25 are too wide to fit without a complete front suspension redesign. The older SOHC 1.8 engines (Brat, GL) will fit between the towers, but just barely. To get it low enough to fit the tranny anywhere near the stock tunnel location, you will probably have to notch the framerails, too. Then you run into the problem of how to run the forward driveshafts. If you've ever seen one of the set-ups out on the car, it's a right mess.
As with any swap, with enough fabricating skill it could be done. But you would have to ask yourself why? That's alot of work for not much power (relatively speaking). And all just to have the only AWD 1200?
