This past weekend I went to one of our SCCA & Porsche Club track days at Spring Mtn MotorSports Ranch. This was going to be the test for the Mid-Close 4 speed and the 14lb Flywheel. (For those who don't remember I finally decided on doing the SCCA C-sedan back in the day spec for the Pokey).
Well of course living in one of the driest deserts in the world what happens..................an inch of rain!!! Not to mention it was only 40 F outside. I'm running shaved to nothing Yokohama 008R tires.
Well the gearbox was perfect, finally not having to rev it to 8K in 3rd just to keep the motor from bogging when I upshift. Also the taller gears meant I could use 1st in a couple of the hairpins, of course in the wet 1st gear resulted in pure wheel spin. Also I know make 5 fewer shifts per lap as I'm able to carry 2nd through multiple corners vs. furiously going back and 4th between 7800 in 2nd then 3rd for 50 ft and back to 2nd etc. The most hilarious it was going about 75 MPH in 3rd heading down towards turn 14 on about my 5th lap and the back tires sun like mad.....must have gained 2000 revs in 50ft.
Going from the 22lb stock flywheel to the 14lb one (machined per the specs right here on 1200.com put a nice snap in the revs and the thing still was easy to live with. (I also removed the mechanical cooling fan) All siad and done even with a way slick track I still managed to get with in 3-4mph of the previous top speeds.

Highlights of the track day: Passing lots of cars with the 90HP wonder, including one of those M Coupe Z-4 BMW things....so slick I actually left him accelerating down one of the short chutes. A fellow SCCA club member with an S-2000 briefly caught as the tracked dried then the rain really came down again and I had 900hp again.....just after that a guy came by us both in a 350Z and he was hustling the car pretty hard, then suddenly he was in front of us again. I wondered why until I sa w the muddy pair of J J marks on the track. My Student for the Day was this 6 5" ex Hockey Player with a Ferrari 360, as I was going around the track in his car I kept having this vision of him picking me up by the ankles and using me like a bat to bash my car if I spun in his car (standing water was ever where and even my car was hyroplaning)......fortunately I never came close just cruising round showing him the line. A short time later the track safety crew called the day as lakes were forming.

The final bit of fun: the track is in the next valley over and oh boy I got to drive the E350 Camper Van with Datsun on trailer, over 2 miles of curvy slushy snowy pass. 23 mph was all I dared as the rig magically steered into corners all by itself.
