in my 1000 when ever I have less than about 2/3 tank the fuel and temp guages will slowley go down and then come back up to where they should be. They can do this endlessly, and then be fine for ages. It doesent seem to do it when Ihave afull tank though. sometimes though, it will just stop totally, which is not good as my car runs a bit hot as it is, and I am paranoid about overheating.
Not a big thing really, but infuriating.
not too sure what to do.

I had the same thing happen to me.
The problem is the "Instrument voltage regulator" This little gizmo resides on the back of the instruments & controlls the voltage that the instruments see, which is less than battery voltage. I think it is as low as 6 volts.

The only fix is replacement with a servicable item. I do not know if it is interchangeable with the regulator from other Nissan Datsun models, but i bought a new one, so it was a looong time ago.

Yeah i was kinda thinking along those lines. I knew that the voltage to the dash is lower than 12 volts, I thought 7 volts, so that even with a flat battery you can still read your guages, lie the volt one to tell you that you have a flat battery! I guess that i will have to pull the dash to bits and find it. what they look like??

I forget what it looks like, but it is reasonanly small & i "seem to remember" it being in a small tin box that is secured by two screws, or nuts, to the cirduit board. It is probably secured by its two electrical terminals.
