Datsun Sunny - Round light version & chrome bumpers

I'm after info on datsun sunny with round lights (early version). What engines come in them (A12 A14?) and did the two door sedan version come out to Australia at all?
How much do they weigh in comparison to the 1200.
Did any come out with the L series engine's at all and in Australia?
Any info would be great, Anthony

yes, and a14 mainly in the wagon
no
book says 865kg 4dr sed. 1200 about 720kg
no, stanzas had an L series and are only about 80kg heavier than a sunny
at a guess the sunny and stanza bodies are about the same weight
the sunny is easier to set up chassis wise than a 1200 , huuuge engine bay and trans tunnel
coil spring rear
they are the newer generation of the 1200 without the character
i've owned both

I went for the Sunny because of the larger engine bay and Coil sprung rear end.

I am hoping my race car (with FJ20ET) will weigh in at 900kg. Heavier than a 1200, but also has a wider track - especially with the H190 in the back end!

i am surprised they are not more popular as a target for modification. they would take an L series engine real easy. they are easy to make handle as well, mine is much better with just firmer springs, still under steers a bit but im getting to it. they would make a sweet circut car. they would work well as a budjet build up.

I agree with you on their potential as sturdy race cars - I've picked up three in the last few months. I still prefer my coupes but for ease of parts/cars and guilt-free abusing I reckon the Sunny is a lot of fun. Plus it's also the last chance to own an A series powered car and if you get tired of that the auto tunnels and engine bays are comparatively huge and just beg for a late model FI motor and box. I'm always on the lookout for 1200 coupes but they're getting relatively rare in NZ now and probably deserve to not be cut up into race cars.

My 2nd Datsun was a sunny and it had a L18 fitted and was good for 196 kph( that was on the radar but not on the ticket!!). I know of a 1200 coupe and a 120y couple 4 sale, but I dont know what they are like and also a sunny sedan and it looks clean. So teretonga if you are after them just pm me.

Cheers for the info guys. I have been having similar ideas, the reason being and don't get me wrong, i own a 1200 with a A15 with a 25/65 cam, a 32/36 webber and an overdrive 5 speed. I've bought some brand new pannels for it (bonnet and both front fenders) but i want a better shell, they are so hard to find. I would really want a 1200 wagon to tell you the truth but they are rare as all hell. I had one but it had too much rust and had to get rid of it, kept all the chrome trimings and rear seat.

I am thinking about getting a sunny as the early ones (round light version) looks very similar to a 1200 and are a little more common to get a hold of as well as parts. As you have said they have the better rear suspension so i would say they handle better than the 1200. I didn't know about the engine bay and trans tunnel being any bigger so that is a bigger plus. The weight differance is the only slight down fall but i supose you can't have it all but it makes better way for a CA18DET then
