Manifold / head question

Hi Everyone,

First off - apologies for the 'same old query' regarding interchanging of manifolds etc..howver this one has really stumped me.

I have recently mounted a a12 exhaust manifold up to my a14 head, it bolted on fine as evrone has said it would GREAT!

I have sloted on the intake (A14) above it and went on fine no dramas either, howver this is where the proble starts...

Where the edges of the exhaust and inlet manifolds are supposed to be 'pulled in' together by a flat washer, the inlet manifold wall/edge seems to be slightly higher than the exhaust manifold - causing the washer not be flush?? VERY STRANGE and confusing

I have secured the exahaust manifold up square to all 3 studs that actually go through it and now i can't seem to 'pair it up' evenly with the inlet manifold which sits hard up agianst the face of the head...?

Can anyone explain or share their thoughts on why this is happening?

Is the a14 inlet not able to run with the a12 exhaust despite the fact that the a12 exhaust will bolt on fine?

I hope all this makes sense..

Cheers in advance

Kieran

I don't have the answer, but this is a good question. Especially with the various custom manifold making activities.

I wonder if the exhaust and intake manifold are the same thickness at the mounting bolts for A14,A12, A10 etc..

Hi Kieran - you have a couple of options.
1. You can get the intake face planed to the required thickness so that it matches the exhaust.
2. I once fitted extractors to a 186 Holden and had the same problem. This motor used a concave washer which was quite thick so I cut away the side that clamped the thicker extractor flange and she was fine.

Yeah i had a feeling it might come down to this, i may look into what something like this will cost??

Hmm.. not to sure what you mean here, so you cut your washer in half ? - I don't follow how this works - or does it ?

Thanks for your thoughts on this really appreciated.

Cheers

Imagine a quite thick washer - say 8mm thick. If you cut 1/2 way through depth wise and then cut 180 degrees of width off you can then clamp the varying manifold thicknesses with that one washer. The nut will be on the untouched face and will tighten up normally. You can cut the washer in a vice with a hacksaw. Probably cost you $1 for washers.
