i have some questions bout rust work. If i get my car bogged up how long does it last?
And plated, how long shall it last?
And where is a good cheap place in the western Sydneey area?

if all the rust is removed before bogging then the bog should last forever. bog usually falls out of a car when moisture gets underneath tyhe bog so if your repairer can insure that moisture won't effect the repair than you should be sweet. rust is usually cut out, plated then bogged over.

don't mess around with lots of bog just use plate it will always last longer if done correctly. only use bog if you need to put a layer over the top to make it all smooth but other wise stay away from it your only asking for trouble

Just like ntruda stated it comes down to the repair being done good and sealed so no moisture can get to it.
A bog reapair can last for so long and so will a plated repair. Plated is no doubt better but if the metal isnt sealed from inside the panel then chances are the plated repair is only going to last a little bit longer than than the unsealed bog repair.

Some rust problems can't be fixed cheaply.
It depends if it's structural or just panel rust.

I've fixed panel rust (on other peoples cars) with a big tin of bog and a combination of VB cans (drink them first), an angle grinder, a pair of tin snips and couple of cheap cans of paint. If your car lives in the rain, it'll rust away to nothing, whether you bog it..or weld it. You might as well bog it.

So you can buy the tools and material for less than AU$100 to fix up to a square metre of panel rust. This includes the beer in the cans. Don't pay someone else to do the same thing.

If you want someone to do it cheap, your best bet is to go into a local smash repair ( easy cause its close to you) and go into the workshop and speak directly to one of the beaters, one of the guys in the shop will be doing after hours work.

i will hav 2 pay some1 to do it as im only 16 and hav no experience at all in rust/metal work, and 2 top it off i couldnt hav vb's whilst i worked on my car at home as my mum has this anti-alcohol thing going in her head (she would die if she knew where i really went, when i said i was going 2 a mates house 4 the night).
does it require much skill 2 bog?

Bogging is a fun activity. You could use coke cans The biggest trick is using a soft pliable applicator, like a bit of icecream container. You put it on with a couple of wipes, and then leave it. If you play with it while it's setting it all goes dodgy, and you are left with more sanding to do.

I can just imagine you convincing your Mum that only VB cans work for bogging up

Can you sign up for a panel/paint course at TAFE? That's the cheap way to get your car painted.

It's good if you have family or mates that are willing to help you. If you don't have this support, it's always going to be hard to do anything. I think working on cars is a bit of a "team sport". It's so much easier if you have people around to give you a hand when you need to sand back the car, or replace a clutch or diff.

To learn these things you are going to have to spend some time studying how to do it for yourself. You sound like you'd like to give it a go, so I recommend you go and learn. It's a very rewarding thing to do it yourself. Also, try the local library (I think they still exist).

Get out there and do it.
