I just like to say that I don't think the stock gearbox and diff is as weak as what some people say. I've got stock stuff behind my mild a14 and over that past 6months with the last 3 months absoulutely flogging it I have not had any troubles as yet. I've not taken it easy either as I've got 2 spare gearboxes and a spare diff to replace broken stuff with. I admit though I do not clutch dump or flat shift.(My way of preserving it a bit)

It has done some tremendous burnouts sending one set of tyres bald not far from seeing the belts(on private property) as well as a hell of a lot of hard launching reving out in 1st and 2nd and sometimes 3rd if the speed limit allows.

Just thought I'd let those know that wonder if the stock stuff can handle anything. Becasuse I used to wonder and ask those questions too.

yeah i agreee... it is the luck of the draw. if you have a fresh 4speed they can hanlde plenty of punishment. the H165 diffs are awsome diffs and i have heard of plenty of h145s that have lasted 3 or 4 years of punishment.

Yes but, I did the same thing to my old Sunny ,flogged it senseless for a couple of months then within a week the diff went followed closely by the gearbox .But it did stand up to a lot of abuse.

i my 165 lasted a good months of hard punishment, dumping, straight shifts the lot untill it blew up, i was using a bluebird 5 speed which was crunching second y the time this happened.

i was impressed with the h165 seeing it was assembled in the 80's and was coping with all the extra power from the CA18

it only took me about a week of driving a VK commodore ute before blowing its diff which was designed to handle the power in front of it

Have you guys ever had your cars on a dyno? I'm amazed at the length of time you have been getting out of a gearbox!
What sort of torque curve do you have? Are they all really peaky engines?

I have never really had a problem with the diffs but the gear box, well; I'm suprised that the block has any thread left in the back of it.

There a Great diff in the utes untill you lock them.I found that the diff is very strong but the axles are piss weak.
My ute was running a FJ20T on 15psi and had a ca20 gearbox custom tailshaft and standard diff.As an open diff it was fine except for the riduculus lack of traction. So i welded it up gave me a bit more traction I got throught a whole street meet with a time of 13.5 but my next visit to the track result in a snap axle first run then to weeks later another snaped axle this time going into second.
Live and learn

No, They are the same width and stud pattern but that is about it. You will need a tailshaft(different pinion flange). Swap brake lins to the other side. And depending on what it is going into the shock mounts may need modding. Opens up a range of ratios. . .
