GreaseMonky81@aol.com Hey my name is James and i bought my first 1200 a few weeks ago and im not familiar with them, i am lookin for lots of parts and misc. info and specs, like brake, and suspension upgrades im also wantin to put a z series engine and a ka series 5 speed tranny can any one help me, its a 1971 1200 2 door coupe, i also would like to know if they are rare at all, i live in Washington, USA, and i have never seen one her before, any info and support would be greatley appreciated, Thanks Again James, also here is my email adress

Hi James, there are several 1200s in the Vancouver USA area, and a bunch more across the river in Portland Oregon. In fact the largest gathering of 1200s in the USA took place earlier this year in Portland.

Congratulations, both photos are 2-dr sedans -- so you have the more rare version. The 2-dr coupe is a fastback and is more common.

Everywhere is a good place to buy parts. Try:
Schucks
NAPA
wrecking yards that specialize in older vehicles

It's not REALLY easy mate.

Depends on your local rego laws as to what you can get away with. The Z24 engine transplant would be Illegal any many Aussie states.

I say you need to get used to the engine and car, and learn about it, before diving into an engine transplant.

You'll thank me when the car stops on a country road, no passing traffic, no phone reception.. You'll need to know how to troubleshoot it yourself.

I don't want to hear about you on the news.. "Young fella in Datsun starves to death by the side of the road"

From your sentence structure I'm guessing you are 17 or 18. Unless your father or uncle is a genius with a well stocked garage or a mechanic, you will have trouble performing the conversion, and trouble maintaining the car properly.

If you are older and have PLENTY of cash, you can either go buy a new V8 Mustang, or spend similar money fixing up your Datto. The choice is yours. At least with the Mustang you can buy it under finance. Very few banks will give you money to fix up your Datto.

Reality sux, but if you want anything bad enough, you will make it happen.

Ha Ha , I love it ,but it's true .. If you stick with the A series engine ( if only for a while ) you'll learn a lot about the basic mechanics of an engine .. This is why I like the A series engines the're so easy to fix . If you go for a Z series engine it'll take a fair amount of work to fit ..and if you don't know much about engines and something happens you'll find yourself scratching your head in no time..BUT IF YOU KEEP THE A12 IN IT (if that's whats in there now) I DOUBT THAT YOU'LL HAVE ANY PROBLEMS ANYWAY .

hey i realize im not the best writer, but i am 23, and im not concerened about the laws here, i am very mechanical and i have my own shop with tools i am just lookin for some expertise on the subject, thanks for all the help so far. James

There are no laws regulating engine swaps in Washington State. I haven't heard of any place in the US that limits it ... though there are 50 states so maybe one of them does.

Anyways we can put in a jet engine if we want. There's no inspections, no laws, you're legal if you have insurance and registration. And you don't even need registration, you can get a 3-day trip permit for $15.
