hello all,
I need a bit of help here, I am buying a datsun 1200 from a salvage yard, but i want to run the chassis number, but for some reason the first numbers of the chassis number is missing, the 6 numbers afer the dash are there, it is a left hand drive coupe, what numbers and letters belong before the dash in the chassis number.
Also can anyone tell me howmany numbers follow the a12 on the engine number, If you can give me an example of the numbers using a generic numbers or X in place of the numbers you have.
Also would the chassis number (the number on the firewall) be the same as the VIN.
Thanks a bunch.

The number on the dash and firewall should match, and are the Vechicle Identification Numbers. ( VIN ) The first set of numbers in the vin represent the vehicle model. The numbers missing from your VIN are, "LB110". The numbers on the dash and firewall should read as follows," LB110-123456 ".

Thanks man, unfortunately the car doesnt have a dash board in the car (by dash I ment the dash in the number on the firewall), from the numbers and letters you gave I can now figure the chassis number on the firewall, which from what you said is the same as the VIN.
How about the engine number any info on that I can see A12, but can't tell the rest untill i go there with some carb cleaner and a hammer to get the gunk off, how many numbers are there after the A12?
Thanks again

If your car is a LHD coupe the prefix will be 'KLB110'. K being coupe, L being LHD. The VIN could be different things depending on where you are. Why don't people put their location in their profiles???

Strictly speaking, these are chassis nunbers. The use of 17 character International VI Numbers [VIN's] did not happen untill some years after this.

It doesn't matter how many numbers there are, they are the Vehicle Identification Numbers whether they are on the dash or firewall.
Look at the title for this vehicle you are buying and you will see that the numbers listed under Vehicle Identification Number will or should match the numbers on your car.

what am I missing here if the coupes started from LB110-70001 and there were 89,541 (coupe) by doing the math then the last coupe should be numbered LB110-159542, then how is my coupe LB110-5XXXXX?

Chassis numbers are often allocated by the factory in blocks for each callendar, or perhaps model year of production. If your coupes started at LB110 -70,000, then it's possible that a block of, well, say 15 or 20,000 numbers were allocated for the first year of production. The following year could easily have another block of numbers that seems to be unrelated to the first block.
By way of example, my right drive Datsun 1200 book lists the 1200 two door sedan as follows. Model B110 [A or T] RU. The A or T is for auto or manual trans. From C/# B110-247023 from April '71 [Z] From C/# B110-341001 from Jan '72 [Z] From C/# B110-655001 from Jan '72 [N]
What does the suffix meam? Beats me, but the point is that the serial numbers were allocated in blocks that were large enough to cover the anticipated production for that particular [sub] model.
The right drive 1200 coupes are listed as Model KB110 U From C/# B110-877228 from April '71 [F] From C/# B110-940001 from Jan '72 [F]
When a follow-on serial number range starts with a number that ends in 001, you know it is part of a block. Strangely, this range of numbers does not start with KB110. Most odd
I'm sorry that i can't help you out with the left drive serial number range.

On a side note, is there anyway to trace through nissan/datsun which engine numbers came with which chassis numbers, and vice versa?
