Which fuel you guys are using in your street/race a-series.
Took my car to the tuner today and when I went to pick it up his first question was "What fuel have you got in it..??"
He said despite his best efforts it's still pinging it's head off.
I filled it with Shell Optimax and he's now suggested getting something better.

I use BP ultimate because its less likely to foul plugs

what comp do you have and what total timing advance do you have

No clues. I've had someone set the motor up for me and I think it's about 11:1 comp and 16 degrees total timing advance. Does that sound about right..??

I'll get some specs on the motor and that might make make things a little easier hey..
I only wrote the cheque for it...I'm not smart enough to build one.....not one that would live anyway.
Thanks.

That comp and timing sounds Ok...
I run 98 vortex also less likely to foul plugs.
Optimax ssems to have detergent additives which produce incomplete burning and fouls plugs, and you have to throw them away. The fouling is caused by carbon deposits inside the plugs which causes low resistance and the spark tracks inside the plug intead of across the electrodes and you cant clean them up again.
I run a 54/96 cam but I dont think that would make a difference.
Try a complete drain of the fuel and ensure its clean

I'll give that a try and see what happens. The tuner said to get something else and he'd have another go at tuning it. I didn't get cam specs etc.. for the motor when it was built because I was told that it was on a need to know basis....
The tuner did say that it was one of the crankiest motors he's had in the shop. Only specification to the engine builder was a race motor what I could drive to hillclimbs rather than trailer it.

when i built my turbo engine i pulled an old dizzy to bits and welded up the slots that the advance moves in and this gave me 10 gegrees total advance and i ran a base timing of ten degrees

This is all interesting stuff regarding the type of fuel to use.

I can vouch for not using Optimax, I used it all the time because my nearest servo was a Shell servo - and my plugs seemed to foul all too easy. I moved recently and now I use Vortex because it's now the nearest servo - and don't seem to have that problem as much anymore.

Never really though about the possible reason till I read this post.

I also use BP Ultimate. I beleive it is the best fuel availible from the bowser in Aust [IMO]. It always drives consistanly on the track. Plugs are always in good nick.
