please help!! harmonic balancer install

OK I'm having a tough time with putting my A14 back together. I need help!! I've got the timing cover and oil pan on. I followed the Haynes manual to this point I think. Now I've noticed that the oil thrower disc isn't sitting in a "groove" on the crankshaft, so basically it can spin freely. See this picture: picture1
That's not right, right? The thrower disc won't spin unless it's locked in the groove.

Theother problem is I can't get the harmonic balancer (pulley) to go all the way on. Well at least I think so. The main crank bolt and washer should directly contact the crankshaft and not the pulley right?? I can't tell how far the pulley should go on but I can't get it to far enough for the main bolt/washer to torque onto the crank shaft end. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Maybe this pic will help. This shows as far as I can get the balancer on: picture2

I've been struggling with this piece of shiat for a long time now. Please help!!! THANKS in advance.

Everything looks fine. The oil slinger should be sandwiched between the pulley & the sprocket on the crank. This is what locks it in place so that it rotates with the crank instead of just floating around.

If the pulley went on far enough for the washer of the crank bolt to contact the crank itself, then what's going to stop the pulley & slinger from moving around.
If the washer isn't pushing on the pulley, then it could move back & foward on the crank, even if it's only a few thou & with use, & harmonic vibration, this will also develop into wear on the key, & keyway which isn't good as these are not realy meant to drive the pulley, but more to align it

The washer pushes on the pulley, which pushes on the slinger, which pushes on the sprocket, which in turn pushes against the shoulder of the crank, effectively locking everything in place where it should be.
When you torque the bolt up to it's correct value, you can be confident that everything will stay put, be in alignment, & will stay that way untill you take it apart again.
If the face of the pulley came flush with the crank, or even ended up a little further back, allowing the crank to protrude a little, this couldnt happen.

Wow really? That makes sense now that I think about it though(sandwiching the slinger between the pulley and the crank). Maybe what i shoudl do just to be safe is measure how far in the pulley shoudl go just to be sure that it's not binding up and goign on all the way. Well anway thanks for the help Dodgeman - I'll try putting it back together tomorrow.
