Argh - what's wrong with my ignition?

Awright fellas,

My KB10 starts fine, idles fine and drives fine. When it's cold it has a bit of a miss which goes away when it warms up a little.

If I go down to the shops and turn it off, when I go to start it again, it doesn't want to fire.
I have to keep cranking it for ages until it reluctantly starts again.

It has brand new spark plugs, ignition leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, points, rebuilt carby, new fuel pump and reconditioned head.

The timing has been adjusted to factory specs.

What the?

TC

sounds like flooding to me. Not ignition.

Is it possible your float level is too high, and some residual pressure i the fuel line is enough to push into the intake?

try pushing your foot flat to the floor like when it's flooded..does it help?

What voltage is the ignition running at? 9v? 12v? 14.4v? Measure it across the coil (on volts setting), check cranking voltage too.

Compression equal on all cylinders?

My Partners 1200 does the same, it runs on like 2 cylinders until clears out, sounds like a lawnmower, also every so often (more noticable when in 'd' its auto), it will stumble, just like one miss, thats all. Every electrical part is new, also recon carb. Timing set on the weekend, its a gremlin thats been driving me nuts too!

Thinking now, the only part not replaced is the ballast resister, could this be the problem?
Anyone?

I have heard that once the motor is hot enough, even after turning it off it will continue to draw fuel because the fuel in the carb is evaporating due to engine bay temperatures and creating a vacuum. I was told that old Holden sixs were particularly bad and if parked on a downwards slope could drain a lot of the tank. Weather of not this is a old wives tale or not Im not sure, still until proven wrong it could explain why your car could be having trouble starting hot, maybe theres no fuel in the carb at all.

There is quite possibly nothing wrong with your ignition. If you have ignition problems it will usually show up first at full throttle & at the engine speed where maximum torque is developed. Just check the point dwell angle & timing anyway to be sure.

If the needle & seat in the carb leaks just a little bit, you may find that, when the engine is turned off, the fuel pump, which has the diaphram in the downmost position, may be slowly pushing the contents of the pump into the carb, overfilling the bowl & giving a flooding condition. If the leaksge is small enough it does not even show up as a problem at idle if the fuel consumed is greater than the leakage, but as the leakage gets worse, problems develop at idle when the leakage is greater than what the engine uses at idle speed & the carb bowl slowly overfills.

To fix this problem on my sons 1200 coupe I simply put a carb overhaul kit through it, which included a new needle & seat. I correctly set the fuel level, & it runs as sweet as a nut.

That seems to be the problem, the float level always seems to be high once the engine is switched off, it stays on the line perfectly when running, but give it ten minutes switched off and it sits a couple of mm above the line, give it a bit more time and it goes down again. When i put a kit through the carb i set the float with new needle and seat, the only problem i had was getting the measurement correct when the float is hanging from the carb, its meant to be 1.5 mm or thereabouts (dont have measurement here with me) the old needle and seat was easy to set with but the new one has a sprung ball end, and that moves in and out about 1.5mm. I set the float about 1.5mm away from this, but i was unsure whether you just set it touching the ball and this is your measurement instead, hope you understand this essay! geez!

I had the same problem with float height adjustment & it was still too high with the kit in it once I had it running, so I removed the top & used an extra washer under the needle & seat that was in the kit, & all was well. It's a pain, but it might take a couple of tries with the old trial & error method.

No worries, i guess this would also make it use less fuel, we've been noticing the car just slurping the fuel lately.
