Hi all

I got lucky to get hold of a A12GX complete engine except the altenator and the starter.Even the Hitachi Su's with airbox.
I started to strip the engine a few weeks back and have already cleaned and inspected one of the carbs. Looking good so far.
I took in the cylinder head yesterday for a preasure test, crack test and full inspection.
The guy phoned me back late the afternoon at the cylinder head shop to tell me that the previous owner have skimmed the head to the maximum factory specs.
According to him it is 73mm.

My question is:
I am going to ask him to check to see if it needs to be skimmed again (check if it is still straight). If not then I will clean it up and put away and will be able to use it again.Right?
But, what if it needs to be skimmed again or decked?
Is it now a dead loss??
A mechanic informed me that I can get at Payon, I don't know if you guys also know about Payon but they provide us in South Africa with gaskets, can make thicker head gaskets if something like this occurs.
The mechanic told me he can even get a 3mm thick head gasket if needed.
Any advice appreciated as this is a spare GX head and I do not want to throw it away.

Keep it, you've just got a bit more compression, a good thing.

NO worries!
Both ACL, and permaseal make something called a head saver shim. This is a steel shim which is just like a head gasket. They come in .7, and 1.5mm. You simply glue them to the block, and presto! no problems with too high compression. They are availble for most engines with alloy heads. Most commonly they are employed to lower the comp for forced induction. (At least in the circles I run anyway)
