Hey guys,
I was pondering the install of the SR20 with the R32 skyline box into my 1200 coupe race car.
For those of you who have actually done it, what the best way of getting the engine and box in??

I was thinking one of two ways...

A) Attach the gearbox to the engine lift it by block n tackle on a tilt and then wheel car underneath it then jack the car on a tilt and lower into position.

OR

B) lift engine only with the block n tackle and whell car underneath. Jack car up as high as it can go and take out cross member, steering linkages and sway bar. Lower engine to the ground. Attach crossmember and gearbox to engine whilst its on the ground. Then lift engine into place...attach engine cross member to chassis as well as steering linkages and gearbox crossmember...

B) is alot more work, but didnt want to get halfway through A) and have to back out....

you guys got any ideas?

edit...

Also Im using an R32 GTS-T box (same case as the S13) will I have to bash the tunnel for clearance in a manual tunnelled coupe???

I would give serious thought to making the radiator surround removable. As it is a race car and more likely to have numerous engine removals that would allow you to quickly remove/refit it at an almost horizontal angle. This would suit your method of moving the car backwards and forwards with the engine on the chain block.

IPRA NSW would deem this illegal...no modifications can be made to the radiator support panel.

B ish,

Put the engine an g'box together on the crossmembers on the ground.

One of ya's (youse) on each side, wheel the car over the top.

Simple.

It is as easy as undoing the strut tops, steering box, idler arm and brake lines. This way you won't have to seperate balljoints and lower control arms. . .

and, yep, grab a hammer for the tunnel.

One of ya's on each side of the radiator support. You will have to lift it over.

Kinda like this.. .Open in new window

Then put the block and tackle on the engine and lift 'er all up together.

I did A) when I had too swap engines one time (conversion was already done) but im guessing that your x-members havn't been made yet are they?
The reason for taking the box and engine out togeather is because i couldnt get the bell housing bolts out (fire wall in the way).
If you have a hoist you can use, just drop engine and box in through the top.
If no hoist you have to remove the rad support there isnt really a choice either remove the rad support or remove the x-member and ect, and go in from underneath most likely you will have to remove the plenum and alternator to go from underneath aswell................
So in my opinion goin in from the top is the easyest.
good luck
