the 56a is doglegged and is non overdrive rare as hens teeth as the tech section says and the others and have a different 5th gear ratio i think the 60l is doglegged too.

The difference is that other transmissions are larger and stronger. And heavier, which makes the 56-series the best one for a 1200 (keeps the weight down).

56-series came in 3-speed, 4-speed and 5-speed versions, and only the 5-speed is a dogleg.

There were a number of different versions of both the four speed & five speed 56A gearboxes.
My Datsun 1200 competition books shows a standard four speed, as well as an option 1 & an option 2. ratio set.

The five speed is shown with standard ratios as well as a 'close ratio' option.

The B210 competition parts list shows only the five speed, which is now described as an 'option 1'

All of these gearboxes have direct drive in top gear.

The 60 series five speed gearbox is mostly found with a standard five speed shift pattern & this is an overdrive box. There is supposed to be a dogleg, direct-in-fifth version, but I don't recall anyone saying that they have ever actually seen one.

I don't have any of the competition manuals for the B310 either, so I cannot advise what go-fast options were available. Sorry.

the 60L i think was the supposed direct in 5th tranny, but who has ever seen one of those? that would be the 5 speed dogleg one.

can't one just order a different gearset for a 60 series and get a 1:1 5th?

I have 2 X 60 series 5 speeds, one is dogleg and the other is conventional H pattern.

They exist because to the best of my knowledgw this model is the gearbox that was the base for the gearbox in my rally coupe. It has been very modified so looks different to the standard unit on the inside. See my photos for details because I dont know how to link the pic
As has already been implied they are fairly rare and therefore worth lots of money in standard or modified trim.
They are a very good gearbox because they accept lots of modifications relatively easily.
