I've been wondering about standard fitments on 1000's ever since Dodgeman's post about the Granny spec 1000 coupe for sale in Sydney.

Of the three 1000 coupes owned by myself and/or my brother Michael, all three are deluxe models. Are the coupe's available in a standard version? Two of them have factory headrests. Is this factory standard for deluxe models, or was it an option? I also just noticed that my road car has a factory sump guard panel which I know the race car doesn't have and I'm pretty sure the other coupe doesn't have. What else was optional on these babies ?????

I have a few spare sump guards and I think every coupe I've owned has had one (I've had 4 now).

Every one has been the Deluxe - I'm pretty sure Australia only got the Deluxe (why settle for less? )

None of mine have had original seats in them so I don't know about the headrest fiasco.

I had an optional dash mounted clock which is now owned by another member of the club who is putting it to better use than I would.

Apart from that, all four of my 1000's have been the same more or less...

The coupe was always a special car, & the Australian version of it came standard with several items that were listed as an option in Japan. Those items that were standard on the Aussie model, but listed as options on the brochure included,
Radio
Heater
External mirrors [most of the time]
Tachometer
Seat belts

The following items are on the options list & for a very long time, I had believed that they were simply not available in Australia, however recent events have shown that in fact they did exist.

Coupe option steering wheel [3 examples known]
Matching gear knob [1 example known]
Clock [1 example known, another reported]
Head rests [4 sets known, three of them confirmed from Victorian delivered cars]

This is the full list from my Datsun 1000 coupe brochures.
Fog or driving lights were not listed as an option for coupes, but they were for all other models, however there were several of these lights listed as accessories.

There was also a factory 'leather' top shown as an option for the coupe in my parts book & I have seen this in a brochure, but it is not listed in the 'optional equipment' section of the brochure.
My vinyl top is not a factory one, but a distributor installed one instead & it's different from the factory style.

The accessory list for KB10's seems to have been huge going from the available literature & dealers in Japan could build up even a rally spec car from the available components. Most accessories do not appear in the parts book, but there are exceptions, & the aircon is one of these

The Japanese KB10 seems to have been available as a 'Sunny Coupe' a 'Sunny Coupe DeLuxe' & as a 'Sunny Coupe GL' [Grande Luxe] while the Aussie model, known as the Datsun 1000 Coupe, came in DeLuxe only.

The GL came with some extra features, like console, that was not an accessory or an option, but could be ordered as a spare part for fitment to lesser models.

I also suspect that it might have been only the GL that was available with auto as this is not listed in my books or brochures, but I have seen it pictured in a Japanese KB10-GL brochure that someone else has.

There were also other items that show up as options in the Australian parts book, but not in the brochures, like high speed wiper arms. These look like regular coupe arms, but have a stronger spring to keep the coupe wiper blades [with their inverted aerofoil 'wing'] firmly planted on the screen. There was also a 'black' grille in the book, shown as an option, but not listed in the brochure.

Like I have writen before, the factory must have seen the KB10 as the flagship of the range, as they made so much stuff for them.

I don't know anything about a 'sump guard' unless you are refering to the pressed steel baffle that fitted around the sump from about halfway back, & around the front. This was used on all 1000's

Ok. Well I have got all the standard features...so I guess that confirms that! I've already stated that both cars with the original seats have the head rests. None of the three cars have a clock. I'm curious as to what this special "coupe option" steering wheel and matching gear knob look like!

Yep, thats the sump guard panel thingy I'm talking about. It's obviously been removed from the other cars.

I'm on my 8th and 9th coupe at the moment
I haven't had a single one with the sump guard in place
I guess they took them off for asthetics or cause an oil filter change is easier on the hoist without it
However my wagon and granny sedan both have them inplace

None of my coupes had factory seats in them so the headrests are beyond me
No clocks either.

The radiator shroud is listed in my parts book, but there is no mention of what it is for.
1200 models used a shroud in the automatic trans models, & I think that this is what they were for in the 1000's, but the book doesn't actually say. It isn't from the aircon. kit, although an aircon radiator is listed. The only reference I can find to the part you call a 'sump guard' is in the 1200 book, & even then, only in the coupe. They call it a "cover- under front". My coupe has one & I'm sure that my sedan has one, so if it's a rare part, then it's probably because they were removed & discarded.

As for the steering wheel,.... Daniel, your wish is my command.

and the gear knob.

Both the steering wheel & the gearknob were carried into 1200 production. The steering wheel had a different hub, or 'boss' for use on the 1200 column, & the clip-on horn button was different, but the wheel & the horn mechanism were the same.

There was a change in part number for the gear knob during 1200 production, but this quite possibly reflects nothing more than a change in vendor as both part numbers are interchangeable with each other.

This brochure picture shows the steering wheel without the spoke pads, as well as the clock, & the accessory Sunny gear knob. This is the same as the Coupe option knob, but with a Sunny badge in the top.
Look again & you can see the factory accessory 8 track cassette player with cassette in it under the glove box.
