Did all 1200 sedans come with rear seat belts from the factory?

G"day guys,

I'm just finishing up on a project and I'm putting the interior back in and it turns out I don't have any rear seat belts. I know there are mounts for them, but I was wondering if they all had them as standard or if maybe they were an option?

If they didn't have them I won't bother sourcing them because I can't imagine I'll be using the back seats much (particularly when the cage goes in!)

No, not all 1200 sedans had rear seat belts.

But all USA 1200 sedans did.

What about in Australia? Were seat belts always fitted?

Cool, that's a start.

I maybe be able to convince the man doing my roadworthy that it didn't come with them.

Mine is not the deluxe model so it's quite possible that it didn't have them now I think of it.

It doesn't matter if the car has them now or not, what matters is what the relevant legislation says. In NSW that would be the "Motor Traffic Act 1909 [as ammended]"
The way I remember it here in NSW, in the late 60's or perhaps the very early 70's there was a law passed that made it mandatory for all cars first registered on & after the first of January 1965 to have front seat belts fitted, & thousands of cars were retro fitted with belts to allow them to be re-registered the next time round.
In practice, this law applied to all 1965 'models' regardless of actual date of manufacture.
I do not know if this was duplicated in other states.

Check with your relevant registration authaurities to be sure of the rules, although I think that you will be OK without them.
If you are going with a roll cage, & will not be carrying rear seat passengers, then perhaps removal of the seat, then fitting an alloy bulkhead cover to seal the cabin, & carpeting the whole floor/bulkhead area might be an option.

Any rear seat passengers really should have a seat belt.

That's a good piont Dodgeman but then there are intances where it doesn't work.

Take this example of my Dads' friend who was restoring his old sliding window mini. He canged the doors to the newer ones and mounted seatbelts onto the B pillars where you would normally and when he went to get it registered it failed because of the seatbelts. They were not designed to take the strain of saetbelts in that section.

I know it's just me rambling on here but some of it is legit

It is possible that they didn't have them. Datsuns before 1971 in Australia rarely had rear seatbelts. Especially the base models in my experiences.

Another point of interest is that the 4 door Sedans were complianced as 4 or 5 seaters.

For my project, I figured to stick with 4 seater. Gives me an excuse to not load up the Datto with my smelly mates.

FYI ->
DOTARS docs on seating and restraints.

The thing is that all the mounting lugs are in the body, the problem is finding a set of reasonable condition belts.

And Dodgeman, I don't intend on allowing rear passengers with no seat belts!

If it does become necessary to fit belts, then new ones are available from a number of sources, including Rare Spares.
