Im looking to upgrade my 120y a12 engine for as cheap as possible, looking at just replacing carby with a weber or twin webers and changing exhaust. Will i need to upgrade the radiator, will struts, brakes etc need upgrading and what would be best upgrades for these. If any one has some parts that could help me out that would be much apreciated.

If you want to upgrade your engine, think about basics. Give it a tune up to see its condition. If the condition is fair, then, extractors and a good carburetor will free its potential.
Before going into more modifications to the engine, upgrade your ignition system with a better coil, and the distributor can be upgraded by playing with different springs within your stock distributor.

With extractors, a downdraft Weber and distributor and coil work, you will have a nice swift 120Y.

Before going into more engine work, get a decent suspension, good struts, rear shocks, and you can add blocks or decamber the rear springs and get shorter springs for the front.

There is lots of things that can be done, all in accordance with your budget.

Hi.
It can be done on either electronic distributors or in point type ones. Both have the advance springs within. The standard distributor has a mechanical advance mechanism which is controlled by two small springs. The springs are located under the breaker plate or points plate in point type distributors. On electronic ones under the pulse generator plate. The mission is to alter the advance mechanism.
Perhaps a little complicated to begin with. Perhaps that work will be needed with a cam and more performance mods. At this point, just to mention it, there is work that can be done to make your stock dizzy perform like a aftermarket one, within the constraints.
First step in upgrading the ignition system is a better coil, Accel, MSD , or the available ones in Australia, good ignition cables and later on distributor work.

At the momen im looking for a good webber carby, will extractors need any change to the exhaust or will it work with the stock for now, with replacing the struts wat would be the best ones to replace with, i could get 200b ones quite cheap, theres some pretty cheap blocks on ebay i could consider buying and im going to take the car in soon to see how i can strengthen the brakes. thanks for the input.

for the carby, have a geez on ebay, thare are normally a few on there at any given time. also manifolds to suit.
the extractors will need to be either welded or flanged to your existing exhaust. your prob better to take to a exhaust shop and get them to do it. from what i gather, the 200b struts will require a bit of mucking around to fit, you may be better off with some 120y or coupe disc struts.alot of the members here go for the stanza ones.
have a read of the tech section about exactly what needs doing with strut upgrades

You have to make sure those blocks are made for and will work in a Datsun. Any block will not work.

Hi Thomas, I reckon those lowering blocks look like a lot of fun. I reckon go for it. But it may be worth your while doing two things first. One is to pop along to your local suspension specialist. The speedway guys will point you in the right direction. And ask their advice on what mods you plan to do. You may find that these guys can lower the car and stiffen the suspension for around the same money it costs to buy your blocks!!(okay it may cost about twice as much). The front end is an easy stanza upgrade, but i would look into the 200b option. I actually think that alot of 200b stuff is sold as stanza anyway. You will need to spend a few dollars on new bushes and a bit of machining to get some bits to fit.Try to get aussie built datsuns , i think they had better calipers.Number two thing to do before you start is to have a look on this site in the tech. section on suspension upgrades there is an excellent part on upgrading a 1200 suspension to race spec. This is much less complicated to acheive on a 120y than a 1200. Also do a google search on "stanza into 120y" there is a complete and easy to follow diary of how to get the stanza bits to fit into your 120y. Personally i would look for an a14 motor(easy transplant, same bottom end) and they are far lighter than an L20b keep the standard carbie and pipes until you feel like throwing more money at it.
Good luck have fun and don't spend more than you have to!!
