Hi all

I bought about 3 weeks ago a 2004 Nissan almera 1.6i as a new family hack.

It currently has 63000km on the clock and a full service history every 15000km.
The last two services it was serviced with Mobil 1 which as far as I know is a synthetic oil.
My questions:
1. The previous services was mineral oils. Mineral oil and synthetic oil don't mix very well. Could this have caused problems.Sludge maybe?
2. I am struggling to get Mobil 1 and want to go back to 15w 40 mineral oil.
Can this be done? What procedure can I follow to do it.

Regards

i would just drain it as per usual. Get the car nice and warm and drain it. Possibly buy a oil flush and follow its directions before you drain the oil.

Then put whatever oil you want in it

And change your oil filter too, when you pull the plug out of the sump and the last bit of old oil is dripping out of the sump, pour a little bit of new oil into the engine and allow it to run through the engine to drain most of the remnants of the old oil out of the engine.
So when you put the new oil in you have drained most of the old oil out before you fill it with new oil, no point in putting clean oil in a dirty engine hey!
I used to run mobil one in my commodore in winter and 50w 40 mineral oil in summer and never had problems by following the above procedure
I am a bit of an oil change fanatic!

Mineral and synthetic mix ok. If there is the sludge, I'd say the car was not serviced every 15000km.
I don't understand why anyone would use mobil1 in a family car. It's so darn expensive with oil prices these days.

Don't use oil flush, I've heard them do more hard than good, especially if the instructions aren't closely followed. Just drain the oil while the engine is warm (not hot), and drink a beer while it all drains out. Refill with the oil of choice after that.

Any oil suitable for multivalve engines (if replaced regularly) will do the job.

It's not a race car...don't worry so much.

Thanks for the replys guys.
I checked the price of Mobil 1 yesterday.
It is R300 south african rand for 4 litres.
That is expensive here.
That is why I want to go back to mineral oil.
I can get a damn good mineral oil (which I plan to use) for about R100 south african rand. Because I do lots of town driving I would then change it every 8000km to keep it nice and clean.
But Mobil 1 I would only use on a turbo and a race car.
This thing is to buy groceries and huddle along where the family needs to go.

normally it shouldn't be a problem... i had a problem 100 miles after switching to royal purple synthetic, should have been a good oil, i doubt it had anything to do with my oil pump siezing, the engine was fine.

truly you'll just spend a lot more on oil if it's a grocery getter. jsut buy a good quality oil in the right weight.
