According to the enging size to vehicle weight calculation the largest donk you can fit into a 1200 ute is a 2.0L NON TURBO or a 1.8L TURBO. So unless that SR20 is a DE (non turbo) not a DET (turbo) it will be illegial to fit in. That being said I have heard on such conversions being done, and passing, so unless you know an engineer who will pass the conversion dont bother. I am currently gathering all the necessary bits to put in a SR20DE into my 1200 ute, in QLD. I chose this engine cause bang for buck its cheaper to do up over the CA18.

Also it doesnt matter if the donk is dead stock or has the piss worked out of it, the only think the LAW MEN care about is the capacity of the donk and if it is naturally aspirated or forced induction. Hope this helps, Just keep asking questions dude, its the only way to get the info you need.
