Because it's never been run, I don't think it's worth it. Unless you can get a written guarantee from the engine builder.

It's worth 50-90% of parts cost + $500 for a short block.

So I'd estimate $3000-$4000.

A piston slapping forged rebuild is not worth much.. if that's what it is. Again without a guarantee from builder (who is likely not the seller), then it's a big gamble.

Seems it's a cleaned up motor with ported head and forged pistons and rods ~$2500.

Nobody in their right mind would spend $1000 on coils..so I'll ignore that component.

The obsession with 400hp is unrealistic, and tells me this guy has no idea. It's like saying a model car can do 1000km/h (small font, scale speed)

I'd rather pay for the "forged" rebuild myself at $4000-7000 for something with a warranty. This option could be $5000 + $3000 for a rebuild because head is soft/warped, cooling galleries not cleaned properly, piston slap, wrong torque on big ends, cracking crank.. etc etc.

It's an 18 year old motor....

I'm just starting to realise that after sales support is non-existant on internet transactions. The Ebay economy is not dissimilar to dumtel and those other 'info-mercial' sales methods.

Am I being too negative?

You've got every right to be negative Chris, always be sceptical with this kinda stuff. If he was asking $1000 for it I'd say buy it, but I'd never buy an engine for this amount privately over the net.

Is he willing to let people come and have a look? I doubt it'll sell but might be interesting to have a look.

Agreed chris you could build yourself a pretty good ca18 engine for that kind of money and know its right.$10k for a mild ca18 build is a bit extreme.
It doesnt look like a turbo or manifold is supplied either stock injectors and cams no adjustable pullies. I think they guy is dreaming.
If it where dyno proven to make 450hp which I doubt it would it might be worth the money with all bolt ons.
