Hi all I have a 120y and I was just wondering if anyone knew what the extra red part/light is in the dash above the CHG light, is for.
Obviously it may have a usage in another country.

Just intersesting to find out.
pictures if possible of what it is for.
Cheers.

hand brake light, i think. In the 1200 there's a yellow with black trace wire in the dash loom. If you get the handbrake lever with a light switch, run a wire to this male spade fitting & put a bulb in the unoccupied opening next to the oil & charge light, this will be a handbrake light. Could be the same for the 120Y. Thats in the coupe dash & wiring loom, i never had a sedan/wagon strip dash in long enough to find out.

Agreed, my 1200 sedan was connected like that, but I think the previous owner did that, as the handbrake sign isn't printed on the dash. What I did see is that the 1400 bakkies that are still sold here in ZA, in addition to being the handbrake light, also use it as a brakefluid indicator. There is a little float level switch built into the reservoir lid. Since I retrofitted my car with a bakkie booster and master, I'll be wiring it accordingly. No harm in knowing when you are about to run out of brake fluid...

In my 1200's I always mount the flashing LED for the alarm in this spot. That way the dash still has a flashing alarm light but no extra holes in the dash. I have also used it on a customers ute as a shift light. I just mounted the shift light under the dash and removed the shift light globe and run wires to this dash light position.

O and, this wire should be switched to negative ground. Meaning that the light already has a permanent positive supply, this wire just gives it a connection to ground.

I thought about this also... But I'll still use it for it's intended purpose...

No it's not for a handbrake light or brake fluid warning light as that is originally just above the steering column surround.

this is a 120y dash I am talking about here.
The spare light is at the very top in the fuel and temp part of the dash above the factory lights which are high beam, oil pressure and charge.

O ok, sorry for that then. The 1200 didn't have the extra row of lights at the bottom, so I guess your would be for a different purpose...

On page BE33 of my factory 120Y manual there is an illustration of the instrument cluster & the letters BRK can be made out in this light. I needed a magnifying glass to read it, but it is clear, ... just small.
This is the top light, between the temp & fuel guages which are just to the left of the speedo.

This is the Australian manual & this light wasn't used, so it's purpose is not explained, but this particular illustration must be a 'generic' one for all markets.

Is it for brake fluid level warning, brake circuit fail, or hand brake? I can't answer that, but it's a brake warning light that obviously is used in some overseas markets.

Edit
I have just been checking the factory manual for 1200's & some cars had a "hand brake warning switch" as well as a "service brake line pressure differential warning switch" [brake circuit fail] These were wired through the same light on the 1200 coupe instrument cluster, so the unused warning light in our Coupes is for both the 'hand brake on', & 'service brake circuit fail' function.

I now speculate that the unused 120Y light was used for the same thing.

I hope to use this light in my coupe for the auto trans 'overdrive on' function. [Jatco 4N71B]
