ok i've been working hard on my ute. mostly cosmetic work. brought some tyres

now my eletrics are gone up the ####. the brake lights, speedo, wind screen whippers, dash lsght and park lights work. but nothing else. also the stero doesn't work and im not sure about the heater (did that have a fan as standard?)

now im hopless with car electrics. can someone suggest someone good in melbourne to take it to? i want the whole electric systeme cleaned up (rewired?)

also. i have an a14 head (and engine) the a14 head will bolt straight onto the a12 yeah?
which has different sized valves to the a12 head?
where can i get some valves from?

no i don't want to put the A14 in.

i plan to put motor bike carbs, exhuast, magneto and a cam to the engine. then i can work on my cortina

anyway thats my life story thanks for your time
chris

some answers .... and some more questions

do you have head lights, tail lights and brake lights ?? did you check all the fuses ?? is the stereo a new one ? as in not original ? and is it wired back to the ignition or will it run without the keys ?

the ol' dattos have a 2 speed fan for the heater ... you turn it on by pulling out the heater control slider thingy.

the A14 head will bolt onto a later model A12, does your motor have the distibuter up the front and the altenator down low on the passenger side ? if it does then you have an early A12 and the head will not be a straight bolt on but it doesn't take much to get it right to go onn to the early motors.

the A14 has bigger valves than the A12 already, did you want to go bigger than the A14 valves ?? on the A12 you shouldn't have any issues with the A14 valves even with motorbike carbs.

ok i don't have head lights. i do have brake lights and tail lights

the stero is not original and doesn't work at all.

looks like my heater fan isn't work

its an early model A12.

i don't want to go bigger then a14 vavles. i just don't have a set of a14 vavles

so what do you have to do to get an a14 head to fit the old a12?

got me stumped on the electrics bit ... i'll check a couple things and get back on that one ...

to get the head to work you need to drill a new oil supply from the face of the head thru into the existing one ... the "old" block oil feed doesn't line up with "new" head feed. they are only slightly out and drilling thru at about 45deg from the face of the head into the existing oil feed in the head will solve it. if you have the A12 head gasket and the A14 head you should be able to pick up the difference pretty easy.

does the A14 head you have not have valves in it ?? the ones in it shoull be right if you are getting the head o/hauled just get the valves that are in it reseated.

ok. sounds easy enough.

yeah my a14 head only came with one valve.

hmm im also going to need springs. will the a12 roller rockers work with the a14 head?

oh god dam i got an a14 with the important parts missing hehe well if im lucky the other a12 i got was a later model one. (thats complete with a water pump )

should be awesome with the bike carbs! but the big difference between the A14 and A12 head is the performance. the valves just 1mm odd smaller makes a fair difference to the nature of the motor

was your ute physically running before? it could be that there is a short somewhere that's restricting the amount of voltage you can use so only the tiny things will work. Clean the batery terminals for starters and see if there is any change.

the A12 gear will work on the head ... valves you can stil buy new from nissan or aftermarket as well.
the A12 valve springs could also be used but you'd be better off buying a set of double valve springs new, especially if you're planning on running the bike carbs you'll be wanting to get a fair few revs out of it

good question about the "was it all working before" on the electrics front ?? what were you doing when it stopped working ??

park lights
indactors
speedo
dash light

the idactors stops when i was indacating for a conner. just taking it for a run to check for noise etc. nothing

i'ld be happy with 7,500 rpm haha

anyway. i'll finish the sanding, throw some primer on it and take it to an auto elect
