when upgrading to bigger calipers most end up towards the front to avoid hitting the steering arm. standard is to the back tho

back is trailing, front is leading.
i have noticed there isnt any real pattern in new street cars. wouldnt mind talking to a race engineer about it, i rekon it'd be interesting

Leading they would get extra cooling but more weight up front. My 280zx calipers hit the steering arm when I tried to fit them the other way around.

The best way to tell is........ Make sure the bleeder is at the top, as other wise you will not be able to bleed the brakes

As has already been said, it's simply for clearance. If you can bolt them in the original position & not hit anything, then do so. If you can't, just swap the struts side to side & put the caliper on so the bleeder nipple is at the top. My 1200's with big brakes always had them to the front, but the sunny's have always had them to the back. Makes no difference to the stopping power of the brakes, one way or the other. thats why formula 1 went to twin calipers for a while before they were banned, it didn't really matter which side.
