Reversing front struts

I currently have sunny struts on my 1200 ute (I know there are better upgrades but I am running with these struts for now).

I want, need to upgrade the brakes further and was told that I should use modified magna/verada discs and VT commodore calipers as they bolt straight on. (luv this "straight on" stuff ha ha)

I have two questions:

Does anyone know where in Sydney I can get the magna discs machined and redrilled ?

and secondly,

Yes, it's true, in an off the car trial fit the calipers bolt straight up but on the car they hit the steering arm way before the bolt holes line up.

I have now been told that I should reverse the struts IE: put the left on the right and vice versa as this will put the caliper at the front instead of the rear and solve the clearance issue.

I had a trial go at this and it looked ok but has anyone done this, will it work ? Would it change the steering geometry ?

most strut conversions require you to do this

not a problem at all

yes vt calipers do bolt straight onto the strut, so bolt spacing wise they are good
but
vt calipers are #### and arent compatible with magna discs, save your self the trouble and just get some vr/vs calipers

and the reason behind this, first off the magna disc is 24mm thick i think and vt calipers require a 28mm thick disc...so your starting with a disc thats already 2mm under the minimum thickness for the caliper

second the vt calipers have way to much flex in them and require a 1.25 inch master cylinder for them to work properly

where as vr/vs calipers suit a 23mm thick disc, and the magna disc at 24mm will just fit in
and they also will work fine with a much smaller mastercylinder

There are two rotor sizes on the VL, VN, VR,VS commodore, which means although the caliper looks the same, the casted mounting bracket is different. The Turbo and V8 models had the larger cast iron bracket that attaches to the strut.

YES you reverse the struts when the caliper hits the balljoint.

It makes no difference on single piston calipers.

I don't know if the commodore calipers are a direct swap onto the sunny calipers.

Measure a commodore caliper mounting holes, and measure the sunny strut's caliper mount. They might be the same. I was always told to use large axle 180B struts with the commodore calipers.

My old man could do it for you no problems. He is in Castle Hill, and has done about 10 magna/commodore brake installs.

The hubs are machined to centre the rotor, and the rotor needs it's holes redrilled. Optimally, you can get 'undrilled' rotors from DBA. And it's better to get the non-ABS ones, because they have less holes to interfere with the redrilling.

Cheers,
Chris

VR/VS calipers are all the larger offset, thats why i say to use them as they are easier to find, but all the larger offset calipers should have fins on them as opposed to the normal v6 calipers being smooth
makes it easy to tell on stock cars

commodore calipers ,both single and twin piston, will bolt straight onto sunny struts, but sunny struts have the smaller stub axle and longer strut insert so your better off using 180b struts
