Hello,

Been chasing a KB10 head and I have been brought to the understanding that it is relatively cheap to shave a head down in comparison to purchasing and postage.

So I feel quite stupid at the moment.

How much should I take off the head?

What is the reasoning behind taking only one side of the head down?

Is it because it is simply uneccesary?

Chris

Well if you were to machine the engine block the pistons would protrude which in turn will make it a bitch to setup so as to not hit the valves. Same problem happens when you take too much off the head too

plus you will hardly ever warp a engine block were as a soft alloy head will warp really easy.

Hmm I'm confused slightly.

The head is shaved on the side of the intake and exhaust so in theory it is put out of square, when bolted on it will be on a slight angle? why shave just the one side I thought planing the whole underside which meets the block would keep everything in order or square?

na when people say theyre getting the head shaved/ machined its usually only the bottom of it. i doubt you would need to machine the exhaust side

some people do get the head shaved on an angle.. as far as im aware that in to aid in valve to piston clearance ???

Nah Jake I mean on the head face (underneath) but only along the side (of the underside) of the ports.

Wierd i don't really understand why.

if we are talking about angle milling we straighten up the valve angle ie:cut more off the spark plug side.you only do this stuff if you have done everything else first ,big valve port job etc and your looking for that last little bit
just get it faced flat again

none of us can tell you how much to cut off it .i would suggest minimum
we dont know how much comp you have or how much you need. turbo low comp methanol high comp

negative deck heights dont give piston to valve probs unless youve mashed a lot off the head too or have a big cam. can help to get the piston as close to the head as possible to reduce
detonation 0.030" clearance min.

you must measure all this stuff if your doing a modified motor .everything you change from stock may affect other things
