Hi, I was just seeing if someone knew how to ID a GX coupe by it's numbers, so I don't buy a fake. Thanks.

Im not 100% sure but the build plate should have a higher HP than a standard 1200, I know it is this way with the SSS 1600's.

Actual GX's have GX on the compliance plate other than that theres badges, grilles and engine components that can easily be swaped to make a fake.
BUT look for the compliance plate.

Adam.

GX's are very rare in OZ... Good luck with your search. About 4 years ago there was a genuine one for sale, A basket case but it sold for heaps in Melbourne.

Australian Datsun 1200 passenger models do not have a 'compliance plate'. These were not introduced untill the advent of ADR's in the late 70's & the 'compliance plate' was attached in order to certify that the vehicle was built in a certain month & year & that it 'complied' with the relevant ADR's that were applicable at the time of manufacture & these were identified with the relevant number stamped into the plate from behind.

The plate that is being refered to is a manufacturers identification plate & it is stamped with the vehicle chassis number [to ensure that the rest of the data is applicable to that particular chassis], the chassis code, the engine capacity, the power rating & some other basic information.

The standard 1200 has a power rating of 69 HP @ 6,000 rpm. & the 1200 GX produces 83 HP according to the Wiki entry.

As far as I know, the 1200 GX was raced at Bathurst & in order to be legal, it was necessary for 100 examples, identical to the car being raced, to have been registered in Australia at the time of acceptance into the field.

If all of this is true, then this would mean that 100 or more Datsun 1200 GX coupes were sold in Australia.
Because they were sold through dealers into the Australian marketplace, it would be necessary for Nissan Australia to service them with a spare parts supply, & my Australian parts book lists most GX parts. In fact, my 1200 GX cylinder head was purchased new through my local dealer along with the valves, the double valve springs & everything else that was necessary to build a new cylinder head assembly. All of this was available ex-stock, Melbourne.

It does not list the facelift bonnet [the so-called GX hood] as the facelift model was never exported, nor does it include the 5 speed gearbox as this was never an option in export models.
Essentially the 1972 car was retained in production for export markets, including the GX version.

At this time, I am of the opinion that 100, or slightly more, export model Datsun 1200 GX coupes with 4 speed transmissions were released into the Australian market during 1972.

You will need a fair measure of luck to find any of the surviving examples & quite likely a fair swag of cash to secure it.

I can prove this but my stepdad sold Datsun 1200"s at Magna Park Datsun in Wollongong.
He said to me that all coupes were fully imported from Japan and that the five speed was an option that you could specify at the time of purchase.
He also mentioned the coupes were an "upspec model" IE radio, carpet , tacho, headrests ect ect
hope this helps

This is all a bit of a blur now days, and the 3 guys that would be spot on are:1 retired(Gordon Dobie)John Roxburgh,Doug Whiteford unfortunatly long passed along with a few others,on this site only Vixen to my knowledge worked for the racing team and dearlership as a young apprentice at the time. For memory this is how it went. For homologation 100 examples where required to be sold(not registered but could be)and i remember when the Bathurst car arrived it also came with several containers full of spares, virtually complete cars in CKD,which would have counted, but as stated previously they where only required to be sold ,so this meant dealers where able to "own" these things on thier floor plan, but not actually pass them to the public but back to Nissan after a period of time,i might add, back in the 70's you would'nt want to own a new GX as raced as they where full blown racing cars with none of the nice things we wanted back then, imagine Mr &Mrs Average working thru a dogleg gearbox at every set of lights,no carpet or insulation, specially pressed lightweight panels and no radio to listen to...i could go on and talk suspension but you get the picture. Now trying to find a genuine example in Aus. i reckon will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack(huge haystack)cause i feel that maybee 20-30 complete genuine cars ever really turned a wheel and then maybee only 10% as dailys the rest as racers and rally cars only. The CAMS regulations on homologation back then where really loose and frankly cheating was bordering on out of control, and no one did it better than Nissan.
If it was me looking for a REAL GX i think i would look to Australias eastern island.
As for 5 speeds being available in Coupes in Aus.,sorry not available as an option, not when i purchased my new one anyway, but you could purchase one from spare parts for a house deposit fit it and void your new car warranty.
Good luck anyway..let us know how you get on.
