drain the tank, remove tank, remove float from top of tank, clean all the rust and grime from the slider, replace.
I once had a tank that would only ever go to 3/4's then i took the float out and found that it had rusted solid

your method wont work by pulling the dash out. the stock fuel guage works on electrical resistance. when the vehicle is full a float runs accross a variable resistor making it have a very low resistance eg. 1 ohm then when the tank is empty the float drops causing the resitor to change its characteristics becoming from memory 32ohms. the fuel guage works the same way as an ohm meter (multimeter). i would recomend using some 'co contact' cleaner or the likes and cleaning all the connections between the fuel sender and gauge.

your reciever is on the top of the tank. hope that helps

i realise how the gauge works, but im not ruling out corrosion as a reason why it reads wrong.
Although i would check the connections first as removing fuel tank, depending on body, can be a kent

that wasnt directed at you cheater, i posted at the same time as you.i do agree corrosion is a major factor in electrical principles...rust = high resistance
