tailshaft query, help me out?

I have fitted a a15 into my ute,
-using the crossmember with the same hieght mounts
-and the adaptor plates on the mounts to allow for the different mounting positions on the block (50mm rearward)
I have a 56 series box on it (Ribbed casing)
I went to fit a tailshaft and it seems 20mm or so too long, the shaft will not go far enough forward to even marry with the diff.
What do I do?
are auto and manual shafts different lengths? mine is 1310mm tip of yolk to marrying flange face
Do I remove the adaptor plates? moving the motor forward 50mm?
Help me out guys.
Benny

thats the exact diagram i made the plate too, sorry, 50mm was a round about guess, The tailshaft isn't the "same" it was never fitted, I was given it as I am converting back from L series to A series, so maybe I have the wrong tail shaft?
Are all A series gearboxes the same length?

What year is your ute? 1974-up naturally fits A14/A15 so remove the adapter plates.

There are two lengths of A-series gearbox:
* 56 & 60 series 4&5-speed
* 63 series 5-speed & automatic

But there are two kinds of tailshaft for the 56-series:
* 1971-1973 to fit the H145 rear axle (tailshaft rear flange is nearly square)
* 1974- to fit H150 or H165 rear axle (rear flange is rectangular pattern)

well its just a 56 series 4 speed, so it should be the right length
my tailshaft has the square end on it with all sides flat.
so your sayin, if it marry's to the diff at the flange, then its the right tail shaft and I should move my engine forward by modifying the mount adaptors?

Why are you using mount adapters? Is your ute a 1971-1973 model?

whats the best way to determine age if the car has no tags? the cross member that I'm using has equal hieght engine mounts, left and right, thats the pre 74 crossmember isn't it?
I just tried to marry my tail shafts to the diff, niether of them fit, 1 is too large, the other is too small. so I think I need to find a H150 tailshaft.

gearboxes are all the same length (except the autos)

definately sounds like an issue with the wrong tailshaft to suit your diff

h145 and h165 are different length and i assume h150 different again

are you sure you have h150??

How do i tell if it is a h150 or not. I just assumed it was becasue i have one tailshaft flange too small and one too large
The shaft has borg warner written on it. so I'm guessing my ute hasn't got a borg warner diff in it. aren't utes usually H165?
never assume, it leads to assumptions!

Yes, it is quite simple.

1. You have the wrong tailshaft:
* No ute came with a borg warner rear axle
* Your tailshaft says borg warner
* Some sedans came with borg warner rear
To doublecheck that no one replaced the original rear axle assembly with a different one, look on it, does it say BW anywhere?

2. Old style 1971-1973 A12 for equal height crossmember horns. Hence adapter plates for 1974-up (including A14) engine.

by the way, no utes came with H150 diff. It was either 1971-1973 H145, or 1974-up H165.
