im looking at ptting the 31 rear drums on the h165 axle i have and im wondering how you get the drum completely off, i can only seem to getthe front and the internals off but not the backing part... do i have to remove the axle to get the rest off?

yep remove axle and the whole lot should come off (going by corolla, gemini and datsun experience)

Yeah there is 4 bolts behinde the axle flang, there is a big hole in the flang so you can undo'em and it shoul all come out with a little persuasion.

you need a press to remove the wheel bearing before the backing plate can come off the axle

or cut the wheel bearing off with angle grinder very carefully

either way you will need new wheel bearings to go back on and probably a press to put those on as well
