Ignition Coil Question

Hi all
I was at my local auto shop today and saw a Bosch GT40R ignition coil suitable for my A12.

Is there any benefit in buying one of these over the standard coil that is on the car now? I have had no issues with spark as yet.

Sorry of this is a silly question but I'm new to carbies.

There isnt really much to be gained from the fancy GT40 coil if you dont have ny problems with spark right now. Yeah it can provide a fatter spark over the standard coil, but you dont need it really, well not on a stock A12.
I bought one for my a12 thinking it would help, and it did nil and fark all.

Also,
The R is for the resistored version, in that it must be run with a resistor. Cant remember right now if the A12 needs a resisitor or not, just something to check. The GT40 is available in both resistored and non-resitored versions i am pretty sure.

I should have mentioned the motor is a long way from standard with a cranky cam, head work, increased compression, oversize pistons etc etc

Well thats a slightly different story, but it still comes back to...
Do you have a problem with spark?
and if so, have you ruled out verything else?

If the answer is no, then dont buy it. The std coil is pretty good for most applications.

When you consider how a coil functions, the fancy coils really only come into play at massive revs, in which caase you should be looking at a multi coil setup anyways.

The higher the motor revs the less time the coil has to generare the magnetic field that it needs to collapse to create the spark. A GT40 coil "could" help with that if you are experienceing poor fuel burn or spark break down, both of which can be caused by other factors.

I put the fancy coils in with other extras like 10mm leads, twin spark dizzys, and bigger throttle bodies. Yeah they do make a difference, but without the rest of the package, their benifit on thier own is negigable, and dont do much more than make your wallett lighter.

i put the gt40 coil in, doesnt make a lot of difference, its more piece of mind that u know u have a new coil and not one thats 25 yrs old or something lol...

there not exactly a massive expense so you shouldnt have to budget for it :)

Peace of mind is sometimes worth it, but a new std coil will fix that at half the price. A GT40 is a about $50 from memory. Yeah not big bucks, but if you dont have to spend it, its better in your pocket than someone elses.

i paid $80 for one about 6 mths ago, apparently coils meant to be replaced every 5 yrs.
