SU Carburetors Flooding

I'm about to fit a GX head and Dual HS4 SU Carburetors to my A14 motor.

I compete in gymkhana and struggle a lot with flooding when exciting sharp corners with the current 36 DCD Weber carb. This makes me want to hit the carb with a hammer after each run and it is costing me vital mili seconds.

I would like to know if there are someone that could tell me if the SU carbs also have problems like this or not really. If so what can be done to avoid it like float settings etc.

Excuse me if this have been asked previously, I searched and found nothing.

I also think you won't have that problem. DEFINITELY throw on the GX head and SU's and you will anyway feel the difference. Is the GX head going to get some work done to it?
I might be wrong but as far as I know the 1400 bakkie gives 9:1 comp ratio while with the GX head you will get 10:1. Nice bump for your torque curve.

I think your getting surge, before changing anything try upping your float level 5mm.

Running a big can EFI fuel filter before carb/s will help too.

the SU carbs will pour out fuel if the needle and seat arent working right
if this occurs then you will need to source a rebuild kit check out my tech section on these carbs its in the wiki there is a link to where you can buy the kits and adapt them
other then that you shouldnt have any problems

Thanks for the info so far, this really assured me that the SU's will be better than the 36 Weber.

1200GXman, yes the head and su intake has a custom port job and swirled valves.
Also fitting a lighter flywheel and 4-1 Branch. This will really suite the higher compression then.

The big can EFI Fuel Filter sounds like a good idea. Was thinking of going the surge tank route if these kind of problems surfaced.

On a mildly tuned A14, is a Electrical Fuel pump necessary?

I would fit the SU's and see what happens.
As mentioned, just make sure they are in good working condition. The needle and seats can cause problems. Ask me, been there done that. Have them tuned properly and use the right oil in the pots. If the starvation still occurs, take it from there.

Electric fuel pump is not necessary. They will work fine with the standard mechanical pump.

Try and source a GX 4-2-1 exhaust manifold. They give you lots of low down torque which I think will help in a ghymkana setup.

SUs have the same kind of float system that Weber do. So you may have the same problem.

Be sure to use a 3.5 psi fuel pump. The stock pump is perfect for Weber or SU.
