Was the 60 series 5 speed ever made with 5th gear being 1:1
(not overdrive)?

Over the years, several club members reported having seen or owned a non-overdrive 60-series 5-speed. But so far, no one has posted a picture or any documentation about it. I guess it could be true. But it seems unlikely.

So no...

They can be made to be 1:1. It is easy enough to check.

I could be wrong but it seems like the one I just rebuilt (FS5W60A 5 spd. from a 81 210) was 1 to 1 in 5th gear. I put a sharpie mark on both the input & output shafts at the same place & counted the # of turns of the input vs. the output shaft & I'd swear that 5th gear was 1 to 1, if its not exactly its really close.

yes it's really close. It's 0.821 fifth.

When you rebuilt it, did you notice there was no fourth gear (just the shafts lock together, gears freewheel-- which is 1:1). But there is a fifth gear.

My method wasn't very scientific so that ratio seemed like a 1 to 1... pic's of trans.

this shows the 5th / rev. gearing, only one syncro on the shaft for 5th, reverse gears lock to idler gear

Rev idler gear

1st thru 4th gear clusters on main shaft - all have syncros & move unless syncro is slid over & locked

why would 1 to 1 even matter w/a ratio already so close?

With the box apart it is even easier to get the exact ratio. The only gearbox's that have 1:1 5th will be the ones that 5th is the input and drop gear ratio's. The one pictured above is a 60A with 5th and reverse being together.

In other words, if it has a gear for 5th, it is not "5th direct" transmission.

In the regular 4-speeds, there is no mechanical gear for 4th, instead the input shaft locks to the output shaft (direct drive). The counter gear has 1,2,and 3 on it.

In 60 and 63 five speeds, there is a mechanical 5th gear. Fourth is direct, fifth goes through a gear that meshes with the countergear. The counter gear has 1,2,3,and 5.

In 56 series 5-speed, fifth is "direct". There is no counter gear for fifth. When in fifth the other four gears spin freely on the main shaft. Counter gear has 1,2,3 and 4th.
