Hey all,

I have a morris minor with an A12 that has been sitting in my garage for about two years now. Anyway i've recently got her going again but have a bit of an issue that i can't solve. I pretty much got this car to learn simple mechanical stuff on, and so far so good, but this has me stumped.

The engine starts and idles fine, 600rmp smooth idle. Timing has been set at 5 degrees, vacuum advance seems to be ok. I've got a new fuel pump, coil plugs and leads in.

My issue is when i put the foot right down it revs up fine to about 4k revvs. At this point the engine starts "bouncing" off the revs, just can't get itself up any further. If i gradually increase revs rather than flooring it it can climb all the way through the rev range fine. Now, i do have the vacuum advance unhooked and plugged because it seems to be making the issue worse rather than better. (with the vaccum hooked up it splutters through acceleration too.) Also the carb has been re-conditioned....but probably not tuned correctly to the engine cause i don't know a whole lot about that. My guess is a secondary jet issue, but its really only a guess and id have no idea of how to remedy that.

I have attached a small sound byte of the issue in case that helps. Thanks in advance.

hmmm ok set the timing to 10degree, point gap should be 18thou (tight). start it up, hook up the vacuum advance, screw in the mixture screw till it almost dies, then screw out 2.5 turns. this should fix it. sounds like the point gap is a bit tight and not enough timing......see how it goes. spark plug gap should be about .8mm bit more if you have a bit of a cam.

It will rev to 6000 rpm with 5 degree static timing (or with 10 degrees)

You guys hit the nail right on the head. Did exactly what sunny said and it is purring like a kitten now. I genuinely cannot believe how smooth its running, sounds like a new engine!

Ended up the gap was massive, about 4 times bigger than it should have been. Re-gapped to 18 thou, re-timed to 5 degrees, vacuum back on and mixture tweaked.

Thanks a heap, stoked to have it running so well again! I've attached a picture of the car the motor is in. Clearly the car is sporting credentials it doesn't fully deserve

prawno............just an FYI you can fit a B210/120Y Electronic distributor to the car...........no more points to adjust.

Very nice...............perhaps if Minors came that way from the factory they'd still be making them!!!
