I have been watching this on the news all day and am just horribly saddened.

All I can say is "kia kaha" and know that our thoughts are with you.

Having just been in Christchurch and particularly Lyttelton 3 weeks ago, I was horrifed to see the damage. I've just looked back on some of the pics I took whilst visiting, and looking at what isn't there now! Good luck to all, particularly the guy sitting on the corner playing the electric guitar and singing '60s blues songs to entertain us the afternoon we were there.

Chch will just not be the same again, the Cathedral is a iconic building and to see it in it's current state is just shocking.

Hoping that the future brings a brighter future for the whole area, they hopefully can take some inspiration from how Napier was rebuilt all those years ago and is now a real architectural attraction.

I hope all the best for our fellow cousins.
I love both the south and north islands but will miss the old city
and just hope some good safe sustainable buildings come out of it to
keep everyones spirits high and confident when & if the time comes again.
In Japan I couldnt get used to the constant tremors and shaking but
the construction of the 300 year old house I was living in had gone
through the great Kyoto earthquake and still stands the test of time.
I can only imagine all these modern pre-fabs of today collapsing all
over the place in Australia if we experienced something similar.

I just came back from Mike Reynolds Earthship workshop here in Warragul and have
started to see how frustrating it must be to be an altruistic builder who has helped
in countless natural disaster hit 3rd world countries successfully but is not able
to get anything past in our modern patch like for example permission from King Lake
council white collars A-holes who are holding people back from building better
fireproof and sustainable new homes. Instead its being a year and a halve and all
they give is beaurocrap and waste peoples lives.

So worse is to come for our Kiwi neighbours and I hope they are able to push aside
all these greedy councils who will try to stop anyone building something earthquake
proof and cheaper than the mass often pre-fab crap littering our world.

Hi guys, as of now it appears the datsun contingent in christchurch is all safe, which is pretty lucky as a number of them work in the CBD, My work was pretty much right on the epicenter, I was in the second story smoko room and me and the table were surfing about a meter each way. Didn;t even have time to get under it hit so hard and fast.
you can follow our roll check/thread here
http://www.nzdatsun.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2179
All my close friends and family are safe and miraculously my suburb and house are unscathed, I am VERY LUCKY. but it breaks my heart thinking about the people who have family and friends in the CBD and not knowing how they are. I can't begin to imagine how they are feeling it was bad enough in those first two hours trying to get hold of all my friends and family.
Thanks guys
