Turn each piston/cylinder to TDC and adjust tappet to valve clearance (according to specs, .35 or something for cold).

Piston one at TDC will also see piston 4 at the top of it's cycle so you can set both.

once again speaking from memory.

I take the spark plug out on one, get piston vaguely to TDC and rest a screwdriver on the crown (through the spark plug hole) and watch as it rocks to judge TDC (my crank pulley is blind ). When it's at TDC I check the clearances and adjust. I measure the gap by feel and noise but you should use a feeler gauge.

Don't use the screwdriver method, you should have markings on the pulley to dictate TDC on cylinder one. Once it's there you can shine a light to confirm, you'll see the piston crown through the spark plug hole. Rock your rocker arms back and forth and see how sloppy they are, adjust accordingly.

so its when the valves are fully closed i should adjust the clearance with a feeler guage so the rocker arm isnt pushing on the valves?

thanks!

Well more so when the piston(s) are at TDC. You are looking to adjust the valves so you can't take them (the valves) as a measure as they're the things you are adjusting.

Have you looked at the wikio?

so say it tdc on piston 1 and 4 which one can you measure the intakes or just the exhaust or both (this is tdc on piston 1)

thanks yer i will look at wiki just have to find were it is LOL!

Valve Adjustment

You may need this link later timing

Yes wiki is hard to navigate but it's a bit like an engine, once you know what is from where you kinda start to understand.

Goodluck.... and good work on building you're own engine.

you turn your engine to TDC. how to know your engine is TDC? watch the mark at the crank pulley. when the mark is at 0, it is TDC.

after that, watch the rocker arm, if the rocker 1,2,3,5 is unrock, adjust them to spec. (0.014 HOT)

and then turn the engine one revolution, adjust valve 4,6,7,8.

vice versa, if you TDC the engine and see either valve 1,2,3,5 rock, you adjust valve 4,6,7,8, turn the engine one revolution and adjust 1,2,3,5...

the key is to adjust 1 set of valve at a time, 1,2,3,5 or 4,6,7,8 at a time...

adjusting valve clearance is like learning how to cycle, once you get a hang of it, its ok! so, i would recommend you get someone to teach you for the first time. after that, its a lot easier. really, adjusting valve clearance is easier than reading how to adjust it :)

You need to adjust valves when the piston near TDC but only on compression stroke and not the rocking stroke.

When I say rocking, you will see the transition and overlap of the exhuast valve closing and inlet valve openning. When this is happening, the other piston that is also TDC will be TDC on its compression stroke and you adjust all the valves on that cylinder.

So-
Cylinder 1 rocking you adjust cylinder 4
Cylinder 3 rocking you adjust cylinder 2
Cylinder 4 rocking you adjust cylinder 1
and
Cylinder 2 rocking you adjust cylinder 3

You need to know if your specs are cold or hot specs and if you have just rebuilt her, I would check and adjust cold. Run it and adjust them hot.
