I am visiting the inlaws and noticed that a neighbour has (amongst others) a Datsun 1500 ute sitting half hidden in a lawn he has out the back. It has no running gear and is absolutely trashed but I asked to take a look at it and found that it still has the a15 in the engine bay.

I asked him how much he wanted for it (just the a15) and from the gap in his mouth where some of his teeth should have been he said $400.

So it is $400 with no transmission and "She ran like a bucket a s**t, farkin' blue smoke everywhere, farkin missin' at idle, I reckon it's farked a valve" - his sales pitch.

How much should a totally stuffed a15 with no box go for? Is it worth grabbing and rebuilding? Not sure if he will go lower as when I asked about it he looked at me and said "Are you one of them racerboys eh?".....

'Squeal like a piggy' territory down here.

would be tough to beat 400 for a complete a15 these days i think, just know that you will have to rebuild it and the cost of the motor itself will be a small fraction by then. In the end you wont even care what the initial purchase price is.

Most Datsun 1500 utes had the J15 - hope you got a good look at the motor and are sure it is an A15! they are visually different looking motors but its worth checking

just had an idea - maybe you made the mistake of trying to pay with money - maybe you will have more luck with alcohol or shotgun shells or something - roadkill maybe?

A stuffed A15 is worth no more than $100.00.

I think you may be onto a J15 which is worth no more than $10.00 stuffed.... Maybe $5.00 if it's a runner

Good points,
Will risk going and annoying him again to make sure, as I thought the engine looked a little odd, could not quite put my finger on what it was, maybe slightly larger than I expected an a15 to be.... but he swore it was... then again he swore between every pair of words so not trusting him on it.

Will keep an eye out for roadkill on the way over.

The placement of the thermostat housing is always a good one to tell whether it's a J or an A.

You never know for some bizarre reason it may have had an A15, but not likely. People have sold J15's in the past for a few hundred saying it were an A15 (ebay) so some poor folk have been fooled before. Almost happened to me once, until I received the photo's of the engine. Good luck, but seeing as it's dropped a valve or burnt a valve I reckon steer clear.

Here is a J-series:

Lol, already have someone after that Pigdog, but will still ask him.

It will probably be something stupid like $500, or $250 + an hour with your finest goat.

you can tell by the cast iron head as all a series of our liking have alloy heads.
Also the pic Chris has put up shows the cast iron water outlet for the J15.

stuffed a15 - $100.... no way.... you could get that just for the inlet manifold these days

if it is just a valve problem you will get the head completely rebuilt for $300,

$700 for a full running a15 with reco head is good value!

And I'm back, thank you all for saving me a lot of money and irritation, here is what happened:

Me: Hi, could I look at that a15 again?
Him: Look! Do you want it or not?
Me: ... well I need to make sure that it is the engine I thought it was
Him: What engine are you after?
Me: An a15, the 1.5 litre
Him: Yeah yeah, that's an a15! I told you that before
Me: Are you sure it is not a J15?
Him: Look, that engine is identical to an a15 only it has a cast iron head so it is stronger than the alloy ones, all utes came with them
Me: ... soooooo, it's not actually an a15 then?
Him: it is identical! It has the better head on it!
Me: I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for, thanks though
Him: Fark me dead! Everyone wants something for farkin' nothing don't they!

he then started ranting about how someone wanted the tray but did not want to pay for it and blah blah blah and I walked off.

So thank you everyone for saving me from a scumbag who would have tricked me into parting with my hard earned.
