ok so today i got my motor and stuff back ,and i put the crank in ,all the bearings in ,and bolted a rod and piston in ,then i lubed my newly reground cam up and slid it in
it went in untill it got to the very last juornal (at the front of the cam) and it started to go in ,then it got abit tight until i couldnt rotate it by hand ,so i tryed using a blade screw driver between the gear locater pin and the centre lip on the front of the cam ,i used this to turn the cam and just as the cam was almost all the way in the surrounding metal around the cam broke away (worst idea of me life)
so the gear still goes on and locates and doesnt budge but im not too happy about it breaking ,i thought it would of been alot stronger that that
before being abused ,ide like to admit i fuked up

call a cam regrinding shop & ask them, they may be able to fix it as they weld on new lobe material all the time - not sure about the journal end though, cant hurt to ask.

Yikes, fixable I reckon but definitely don't fit it until it is fixed. I've levered one out before in a similar manner buy putting a wide flat object in the slot for the retaining plate. I've one done this when the cam has gone in too far that it doesn't allow the retainer to slot in. That must have been bloody tight. I wonder why?
They'd probably re-weld the material and re-locate the dowel to a healthier part of that face.
Sorry dude, I hate it when this sort of stuff happens just when you really need things to go right.

Oh ok ,thats abit of a relief ,ill ring southsides in the morning and see what can be done ,just sucks that it happened !
Thanks chris ,but if the pin gets moved wont I need to get my gear redrilled too ? And yea I was abit curous to why the cam was suxh a tight fit ,it realy shouldnt be as tight as it was ,but then I supose having new cam bearing could make it tight too ?
My next question is ,if its this tight ,is there a chance the cam bearings could spin or move when im installing the cam ?

Yeah, look I don't know for sure hey but just give them a call and find out.
Yeah if the locating dowel moves so will your locating hole on the sprocket.
Aren't cam bearings supposed to be line-honed first before fitting the new cam? I'm not entirely sure, I've never had to actually replace the ones I've rebuilt as they aren't normally as worn as the other parts. Were yours worn or did you just replace them?
You need to get an opinion from one of the other dudes sorry, I'm not entirely sure about this one.

Yeaa they just replaced them while It was there ,but im not sure why it was so tight
Might have missed out on a line hone , all the bearings are spotless ,no signs of honing

Yep, it is the new bearings. The Nissan factory manual says dont replace the bearings unless they are damaged because it requires line honing. New cam beaings are not part of a rebuild for the A-series.

if they fitted the cam bearings,it should have been test fitted before it left the shop,(bad workmanship).cam should turn by fingers when new bearings fitted correctly, take it back, get them to fix there stuff up. NOT YOUR FAULT.cam must be free to turn, you can re-drill cam dowel, but are you going to dail cam in,if so you may need a offset dowel kit. remember you paid them for there so called expertise, that sucks. cheers
