i've just noticed the black patch on my driveway behind my ute is getting realy huge and dark. so while the ute was warming up i took a closer look. i put my hand infront of the exhaust and it was spitting watery soot - no smell.
is this normal? it doesnt blow any visible smoke although the other night i noticed "smoke" through the headlight beam of a trailing car. is it running rich?

That is normal while the engine is warming up.
Yes it is running rich. If you have a manual choke, let up on the choke sooner. If you have an auto-choke, you might wish to adjust it and verify that the choke-pull off is working.
