Performance coil, which one do I need?

G'day, I've just got my L series conversion running in my 1200,
But I want to upgrade the old coil to something with high spark and bolts straight in.
Can anyone recommend the best coil to buy to suit a worked L18 stroker,
Running 45mm webers and bluebird electronic ignition. It's PIGDOGS old motor if anyone knows it

Cheers

Use the coil designed for the Bluebird electronic ignition -- it's as hot as a Bosch GT coil. Factory Datsun part. ANd then remove the ballast resistor.

Great thank you. That's right I was told to get a coil that didnt need the ballast resistor.
What year did the bluebird have the best electronic ignition?
I spotted on the Bosch catalogue bluebird and 1200, 180b, 200b etc shared he same part number GT40RT, do you reckon the MSD blaster coils are not worth it?
So when o connect up the new coil I just dissconnect the ballast and make it redundant?

Thanks again for the help

These are the hot Datsun-Nissan coils if they have EI distributor:
* Series II Bluebird (Datsun 910)
* R31 Pintara
* Pulsar N12
* B11 Sunny/Sentra
These all draw around 12 amps.

GT40RT is a replacement for the original 1970 Datsun coil ...
4 amps.

MSD Blaster 2/ Blaster 3 coil is similar to the factory Bluebird EI coil, but it comes in Red or Chrome.

If you have fitted a 12V EI coil (high-energy coil), add a jumper wire as shown in red:
Open in new window

Or you can:
1. physically remove the resistor
2. connect the harness wires to the coil and distributor

excellent, thank you very much for the info there

Sorry if I have this wrong, the 12V EI coil, is just another name for the replacement 12 amp coil such as the MSD Blaster correct?

Is there no difference in performance with keeping the ballast and running the jumper wire or completely removing it as you say?

Will I notice improved performance going from the old 4 amp (A series) coil to a 12 amp one? I'm hoping it will

Thanks again

Datsun-Nissan EI distributors have two wires. Often they are B/W and L (blue). The B/W wire goes to a 12V source, and the closest handiest place to get this in a Datsun 1200 is at the ballast resistor.

MSD Blaster is simply a replacement coil. It is nothing special except it comes in Red or Chrome. 12V and 12A are two different things.

MSD Blaster that you hear the racers using refers to MSD Blaster multi-spark (CDI) ignition system, rather than the MSD Blaster coil.

It looks cleaner to remove it. There is no performance difference.

No you probably will not notice. But it will allow you to re-gap the spark plugs from the normal 0.035 inch (0.9 mm) to 1.1 mm and you might notice it run a little smoother. The larger gap will fire lean mixtures better and should improve fuel economy slightly and power slightly at full throttle.

The real and very noticeable advantages are not increased power. They are reliability and staying in tune longer. See EI for more details.
