The A12 spark plug gap spec (at least for US) is .030 inch. However, mine ran noticeably smoother with a .035 gap. Anyone else noticed that? This was when I used the standard points distributor and low-octane gasoline. When I put the 1.75 exhaust and weber carb on it, it pulled very nice to 6000 rpm, even with the larger gap.

who's spec. are you using?
everything I've ever seen showed the gap to be 0.032-0.035.
if the gap is too small, the spark isn't strong enough to get a good flame front. poor flame front, equeals poor performance.
the other thing that will make a difference is to set your points with a dwell meter, don't just gap them and call it good.
dwell should be set at 49 - 55 degrees
after that then reset the timing, this is because as the dwell changes, so does the timing.
