Is it worth it if not what is

Go from the stock 1-1/2 inch to 1-3/4 inch. It makes a more aggressive sound and is totally worth it

Exhausts aren't a primary upgrade but a secondary or subsequent upgrade.

A primary upgrade would be, camshaft, compression, carburettor(s) and ignition, the exhaust assists to get the most potential out of primary upgrades.

So if you put extractors on a stock A12 you will raise more decibels than horsepower.

Your cheapest exhaust upgrade would be an exhaust manifold off a larger A-series.

Build yourself a draw through turbo setup.

Used extractors $75 to $125
Used Weber 32/36 carburetor $100
Adapter plate new $65
Electronic Ignition kit $65 to $100

Probably your cheapest options for more power. But this won't get you as much power as an A14 or A15.

All the above can also be installed on A14/A15 too.

Otherwise any significant power modifications other than a cheap turbocharger setup are pretty costly on an A series.

Agreed. I originally put a hot dog on my stocker but after a bit of cruising, I had it taken off and the system taken back to stock.

Big exhaust is great off the lights and around suburban roundabouts but a real pain in the ears cruising along country roads at 80kph - especially if you also enjoy a good audio setup in the car like I do.

I also find a stock motor works best this way - they actually seem to like a bit of back pressure on the exhaust. Sure you might get another 8% at the wheels with a big exhaust on acceleration but ask yourself if it's really worth wrecking your ears for? For me, that pedal is only ever either off or flat on the floor anyway so whats the difference...

Rip the head off it and plane 70 thou off it. You can get a good gain from lifting the compression ratio. If you want to get real clever take 70 thou off one side of the head (plane it on an angle) This changes the flow from the inlet valves into the combustion chamber and you will get some more gain. Advance the cam by 7 deg also. You will have to re jet the carb but. chuck some dellortos or webbers on it. Simple mods to an A12 to get a good gain.
