Radiator questions
Guest_
Ive just picked up a recoed 120y radiator for my 1200 for $30 at the wreckers, he has had it for a couple of years and wanted to get rid of it (like new condition), but while i was there i saw a radiator form a nissan HOMER. It has the same end tanks but is off a 1.6 lt 4cyl van. Its about 50cm long and 8-9 thick. It has mounting bolts on the sides not on the front like a 1200. How would i mont it? would i have to make alliminum bars across the face of the unit, then to the existing mounting points, or just brackets and mount it onto whatever metal is in the front of the car?
His junior apprectice said he sold one to a guy with a rally 1200, and he says that it doesnt overheat, just stays cool with the fan off! sounds like an option?
Any one using one?

I use a readiator out of a holden Gemini in mine. Make sure that the inlet and outlets ae on the same sides of the engine.
But if they are then it should just be a matter of getting some brackets on it and bolting it onto some metal somewhere (That's what I did with mine).
If it has to mount fromt he side then all you should need are some L shaped brackets

When you mount it make sure it is far enough away from the fan though. Mine is probably a little too close and it hits sometimes. Try to get it closer to the front of the car than the standard 1200 one is.

I used a radiatior from the importers, probably a little big for what you are chasing. Both pipes are on the drivers side and the top one is above the pump outlet on the engine. It is a mx5 or honda ledgend (the import blokes were fighting over that) 68cm by 54cm by 6cm thick. It fits with 4mm each side on the chassis rails, the bonnet just fits over it by about 15mm, that is with the radiator mounted on an angle. I had to shorten the drain tap and spout on the bottom, and there are lugs that mount in the original car that had to be shortened and mounted to a stack of washers tack welded onto the steel in the nose. The intercooler has a gap of about 6 cm off the front of the radiator. Most of the original radiator shroud is gone and I have welded in some diagonal braces to hold the bonnet latch down that mount on the bumper bar mounts as they poke out the front. The grill has been ground so it has very little plasic in front of the intercooler, but all is trying to be inconspicous, the QLD govt is $50 million in the red, so the radars, breath testers and defect notices are coming out in force.

Take it easy

The best radiator I have seen is on my mates 120y with turbo a15 is a radiator off of a nissan forklift! ( not sure which forklift but where I used to work the forklift there was a nissan with an a14 and from what I could tell ( without pulling it out ) was that it was the sameone!

It measures 500mm x 500mm x 90mm!
It maybe overkill but this car never got hot!

He originally got it in a 1200 that he bought and the previous owner said he had to get the connections for the hoses moved!
fitting it was just a few simple brackets!

Since he never had problems with it he has put it in all of his cars scince!

If room is a problem this one is out of the question as 90mm is thick! but it did the job wonderful!

I used one off a old C20 van, it fits perfect on my 120Y, no major mods needed and it fills the entire area perfectly. :)

unfamilia, if you are using an A series motor, I would use the smallest radiator that does the job properly, and the 120Y rad should be OK. With those little motors, the only advantage you have is light weight...

Ah, good point about not adding extra weight when it isn't needed.
