Replacement for mechanical fuel pump?

Is it possible to replace the standard mechanical fuel pump with an electric fuel pump on a standard motor?
The reason I ask is that my immobiliser has a set of wires that can be used to disable the fuel pump. I thought this might be a handy second point of immobilisation. I got em, so might as well use em 8)

Mate it is very possible as long as it is a low pressure pump which will flow the same or more than the mechanical pump!

Any recommendations for what sort and where I can get one from?

Do I get one off the shelf from somewhere, or can I get one at the wreckers off some other type of car?

Mate from me being an Auto Electrician I find it pretty easy to say get a new one!
( Just because if it is somehting electriacal we either have it in stock or can get it for a good price anyway!)
But I have noticed that the other guys around here don't feel the same as this!
Like I have said before you can get stuff from a wreckers as chances are the car didn't go there because the part you wanted broke!
But being it an electric fuel pump you want
I have found from experiance that at wreckers they have usually been run dry when the wreckers have drained the tanks or that because the pumps have dried out that they have bits of dry stuff in them and they maybe work for a few weeks but eventually this crud breaks loose and siezes the pump!

Don't know of any cars offhand that have electric fuel pumps as most like Swifts and Geminis have theirs inside the tank and these would be very fiddly to fit to a tank!

( I do know that Holley do have low pressure hi flow electric fuel pumps! but if you got this you would be getting brand new!)

**** Another thing you could do if it is just for the immobiliser is get a fuel cutoff solenoid! ( It is basically like a tape it shuts off the fuel when power is removed from the solenoid! *****

Or you could just use the fuel pump cuttoff wires for another ignition cut out!
( I would look towards the fuel but as a datsun is pretty easy to start even if it does have an ignition cutout!

I dont mind getting new bits. It easier for me than getting to the wreckers for a start 8)

The cut off solenoid sounds the go!.
Can I get one of those from a Autobarn type shop, or do I need to get one from a sparky?

I would like to get 2 seperate immobilisation points set up. Makes much more sense.

i got 2 electric pumps for $40 at the 4x4 wrecker near me, they were off a L28 nissan patrol, ive had no probs with the first an the second is sitting there as a spare, the pump will provide 5.5psi pressure but im running 3psi see avatar for reason why, stock application wouldnt even need this much

Mate you could try a spare parts shop! They might have them or be able to get them in!
I have always gotten stuff like this from a auto electrical wholesaler! ( I don't know what is around Dubbo or even if they would sell just one to you!)
Maybe your best bet is to just go to a sparky and get him to get hold of one for you!

If all of the places I mention are like the wreckers!( To far! ) You could always go to Melbourne and get 1200rallycars extra pump! lol!

Hey just something more to what 1200rallycar has said about pressure!
( I have never messed with webbers! Except take a downdraft one of my old 1200 as it was just to big!)
But on our standard carbies ( boosted )
We have the fuel pressure set to 6 psi and the needle and seat handle it ok!
( Standard it is 1.5 - 2 psi)
This might mean nothing to you guys but its just a fact I thought you might like to know!

i hate it when people say a "carb is too big", i dont believe it, unless it is like bloody huge, but people talk about twin carbs ect being too big and even single ones now, gees its getting worse

the main limitation to how much power you get is how much air and fuel you can get in there (and exhaust out). i mean take the car to a proffesional to tune if you cant, dont blame the carby

i know this might not always be the case but most of the time i reckon in must be

also hate people not wanting to upgrade carb on old motor or stock motor cause "the engine wont take it" thats bull too! there will be benefits

what u meant by "(boosted)" u mean its a turbo charged 1200? how much do u think needle and seat can handle? 20 PSI!!

Yeah I agree but I wasn't really that bothered with the 1200 as it wasn't going to stay stock for long!

And if the limitations how much air and fuel you get! why don't you all boost your cars?
( Answer because sometimes you just cant be bothered! )
