Gretting's,
Im wondering if it is possible to drop a motor out of a 1200 sedan useing only car ramps, axle stands, small bottle jack and & trolley jack??

I did it with a motor out of a VW Golf, but Im not sure about a 1200, any idea's please ??

Or would it be easyer to unbolt the whole front end as the body is no rusted it will probebly fall apart anyway !!

Ive seen this done with an HR Holden Disk front end, so Im guessing it can be done.

Thanks Guy's

Regards & Thanks

Firstly Greetings to you mate!

Secondly yes anything is possible!

Thirdly why not just get one mate unbolt the gearbox and lift the engine out?
( It is only an A12! My missus even helped me with one!)

I have to agree with phunkdocta, you should be able to do it. Easiest would be as he said and unbolt the box and the two bolts holding the motor on the mounts plus all your hoses, wires etc and lift it out thru the bonnet. The block arent that heavy esp. with no water or oil in them.

Your jokeing arnt ya ?? Lift it out ?? What does a A12 weigh ?

I was even thinking of cutting the front grill area out with the Quickcut off one the the Fire Truck's at my station

How do you drop the Gear box out. Unbolt cross member and put trolly jack under box then unbolt box and then let down ??

Andrew there is no jokking here!
( It's not allowed!)

But seriously it's not that heavy!
I remember the day I got an A15 and brought it home in the back of my Laser!
The bloke I got it off helped me put it in the back but when I got home no one else was around!
( So I had to lift it myself! man that was hard!)

You and your boys are firefighters so you should be stronger than me! ( You break down doors with axes all the time!
Trust me I have seen it on TV!)

Plus you said the car is a wreck so it doen't matter if you have a rest halfway and sit it on the radiator support!( But if you arent worried chop the front why not make it easier for yourself! Just don't tell these blokes you are chopping up a datto!)

And for the gearbox your on the right track!
I would just put the jack under it! then take out the engine! then bring the gearbox out the front! ( Unless you got the car high enough to bring it out the side!)
Either way dont forget to take the gearstick out first!

haha!
also dont forget that when you pull the tailshaft out of the gearbox oil is going to come pissing out. you might want to drain it first!
did both of those when I was taking mine out ;)

Well The gearbox is almost out. I was just going to take the taulshaft off tonight , but It come off so easy I thought I might as well keep going. Cross member come off easy and I could only find 6 bolts holding the box on , is there any more ?? And I did think about the gear stick but I wasnt sure how to take it off , do you screw it off or do you take that pin out, come to think of it is it a bolt ?? I was looking at it from the passenger side etc ?

Yeah the gearstick is just that pin or bolt sometimes!
I think its only six bolts for the box! I can't remember and couldn't be bothered checking! lol!
Also dont forget to take the starter out! but I supose you already have seen that and done it!

chuck some ropes under the motor then stand in the bay one person on either side lifting the ropes then gently rest it on radiator support and climb out then put on ground or in wheel barrow if you plan to move it around (skateboard also handy to wheel around on) motors not that heavy at all for 2 people

i think its 6 bolts for the box, you should be able to wriggle (violently) the box off the motor if all the bolts are undone and crossmember off, just dont drop it on youself when the thing comes out, stuff using the jack it will just get in the way and you will need to pull the box off the back of the motor before you pull the motor out if you intend to pull it out without gearbox

when you go to lift it make sure you have a pair of wire cutters handy, cause no matter how hard you check there always seems to be one wire you forgot to undo.

there is one other way to get motor out if your still not convinced, tryed it once worked a treat, undo all the crossmember and stuff letting the motor fall to the ground then roll the shell off the motor, just thinking this probabl wouldnt work for a 1200 though cause the motor wouldnt fit between swaybar and steering so youd have to undo those too, steering is a pig to undo!!!

It's been too long for me to comment.

You could pull the head off and all the other extra bit to lighten it. Especially if you're not using it again soon. After you get the head off, Pull the sump off and undo the big ends
crank bolts and pull out the pistons and crank

Or you could spend $80-$150 and get a 1ton block and tackle. And borrow a mate's strong carport/garage roof rafter.

The block and tackle is a good investment if you like to fiddle with old cars. I was going to say "old Datsuns", but I reckon they are more reliable than most cars.
