Not wanting to shell out $1700 for a hard lid. I decided to make my own. Using 4mm builders ply, some pine and some basic tools.
Here's a run down of what it took to build:
1. Cut the ply to size using a jigsaw.
2. Make a frame from pine.
3. Fasten the ply to the frame, countersinking the screws.
4. Fill any joins and rough edges.
5. Seal the top using fibre glass resin.
6. Paint.
7. Fit your new hard lid.
It might take a bit more time than buying one but it'll also save you about $1400.

Very nice. Is that plastic paint in the photo? It looks like a vinyl covering.

Its a brush on flat black. I have used this on a few things in the past and even though its applied with a brush, it dries smooth.
