What is involved in fitting a hydraulic clutch?

I know a few people are starting to mess around with gearboxes that need to have a hydraulic clutch setup, but what is actually involved in fitting one to a 1200? From what I understand, the pedal needs to be modified in some way (to push through to slave cylinder), firewall needs to be cut/modified, slave cylinder needs to be added, and line needs to be run to g/b actuator. Can anyone that has done it/seen it done, give me some more detail on this, ie. what parts do I need, does it depend on the g/b I am using etc... I will be doing this to my ute in the near future, and thought I would try to get it right the first time.

Here's how Nissan fitted it to the left-hand-drive 1200s:

hydraulic clutch system

As you can see the pedal is no big deal, just drill a hole. The firewall, if it don't already have a plate, needs a reinforcing plate over where the master cylinder fits, just drill out two holes and bolt it down.

Awesome. Thanks mate. It doesn't seem that complicated now that I know how it works. Obviously no Oz delivered 1200 had the hydraulic clutch system, correct? Is there another Datsun that I may be able to have a look at that would have a similar setup that I could adapt, or would it be just easier to have a look around a wrecking yard and find one that would fit nice and snugly on the firewall?

I heard that the last Aussie utes had hydraulic clutches ... can anyone confirm or deny?

I've not seen that. I don't think they did. I believe they were all cable.

Nissan ZA shows that they all had the same cable mechanism.

We didn't have hyd clutches. Problem is it would have to be a pull type slave to use your existing fork. Or make a plate to house the slave.

I'm looking into it. For a couple of my cars.

That master in the pics if anyone needs one I have 120 of them at work......don't ask why. So I can sell them cheap if anyone figures it out.

Those Clutch MC's would be the stuff for a CA18 conversion. But it's mostly about fitting them behind the brake booster/MC etc.

It's pretty hard to imagine how to make it work on a 1200 gearbox. Did other A series gearboxes use a slave cylinder..I've not really looked. Did the Aussie Sunny have a clutch MC?

All cable clutch her in Oz.
I have never seen a factory hyd unit in this country

Thanks for your replies guys. At least now I know where I am heading with it. Pretty much the only thing I need is that master cylinder as the g/b I am getting should already have the slave cylinder. Do you think there would be enough room next the the brake MS (85 ute), or above it where the clutch cable comes out, to mount the clutch MS?

dattoman, what kind of prices would I be looking at for one of these master cylinders, and can you let me know of the dimensions, and also maybe the part/model number as I am very interested.

Check the dimensions, it's a close fit.
I couldn't get my hands on a 1200 (USA version) Clutch master cylinder, and I've not found another that will do. The 180B one doesnt fit without drastic mods. I know that at least.

I had to modify my pedal box to suit a AE86-Sprinter Clutch MC. And it wouldn't have fit, had I used the 120Y brake booster and MC. This is why the LA/LB Lancer Booster + MC is a good brake conversion.
