I've just recieved an email from a guy who is a member of the Vic HSV owners club ( )

"CAMS today (19/5) announced the cancellation of Calder Park's track
licence, effective immediately, due to the operator, Calder Park Motorsport
Promotions Pty Ltd, becoming insolvent.
With no expectations of future trading and no ability to pay for Calder
Park's track licence for 2003, CAMS President, Colin Osborne, said CAMS had
no option but to remove the licence.


"This unfortunately means that no CAMS permitted events can be held at
Calder Park after today unless a new operator successfully applies for a
track licence",

The writing has been on the wall for a while, but I didn't think it would come to that.

So much for the AUSCAR beginnings. Back when Australia thought we could run a NASCAR equivalent. Are there any major events held there anymore? Because of it's nascar-style Oval section, it used to be a bit of a boring spectator track. But it is nice and fast. It would be nice to have raced around.

I find it strange how such a company could run out of money. Mismanagement seems to be the cause of most Australian company collapses these days. Although these days, the government provides less funding for anything except for their own retirements.

It all started to go down hill when the V8 supercar series dropped them as a round due to the conditioon of the track and the facilities for both teams and driver and also the public. Bob (tightarse) had an opportunity to rectify this by spending a bit of his cash but chose not to hence, lost the round.

You can't expect to run a national class race track funded solely by private and club events it was doomed and personally I don't think he gives a toss!!!!

ive heard a rumour from the few different people that calder park will be demolished to make way for a residential estate.... its understandable considering the street drags are just about the only thing keeping it alive.... anyone else know more about this??

It also seems the end is near for Pukekohe Race way. some famous sport ####-wit Watson has brought it and prefers horse racing to car racing so it will close in the next one or two years, he hasnt given a final date. they are supposed to be building another track out at Meremere but thats another 15 -20 mins out of auckland and it will be the end of cheep track days and racing for us Aucklanders.

I'd heard that rumour Quinn but thought that was all it was - especially with the V8's running there now. Has something changed? You'll appreciate the situation when you are down South - without the population growth and resulting pressure on land we still get to enjoy some great tracks at some great prices. Don't take all the 1200 parts from the SI while you're down there!

hmmm...maybe, but I think what Bob Jane is not saying is, 99% of club racing in Victoria requires a CAMS event permit, not an Auscar or other permit....a CAMS permit. What this means is, yeah you can still hire the track privately and the drags will still be run, because they don't need a permit.

Us poor saps that have two or three rounds of the championships scheduled there for the year are still stuffed

Maybe those club championship rounds don't mean much to Bob Jane and Calder and that's why he doesn't mention it in his press release other than to say 'The number of CAMS permit requiring events held at Calder Park Raceway has dramatically declined in recent years in line with major increases in CAMS permit fees'

yeah that's a point, but at least it's not all over.

but that's why QLD Raceway runs their own sprint events up here outside of the auspices of CAMS. You just pay your money to QR and off you go - insurance organised through them.

Maybe Bob and Calder could do the same for club level events down there?

I hope like hell that Puke does'nt close...though it has been under a cloud for the last 15 years. The V8 Supercars have 2 confirmed rounds for NZ next year and Taupo Raceway is having some serious money thrown at it right now to snag the V8 North Island round. Ruapuna will probably get the other one. And to add further fuel to the rumour mill Wellington city council are working on getting the V8s back and reintroducing the Wellington Street Race on an altered track layout....time will tell I guess but it's really easy to close a track and bloody hard to start one.
